Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

That night, neither Michael nor I went back to sleep. We made up the guest room bed with fresh sheets, brought Maya clean clothes from Lily's wardrobe, and let her sleep under our direct watch. For the first time in months, the young girl slept deeply, her face relaxing into the peaceful expression every child deserves.

At first light, Michael called a trusted colleague at child protective services, while I contacted a family law attorney we knew well. We were determined to handle this legally, but more importantly, protect Maya from whatever nightmare she had fled.

By noon, social workers and two police officers arrived at our home. Their investigation quickly uncovered horrific details about Maya’s background. Maya’s mother had passed away two years earlier from a terminal illness, leaving her in the legal guardianship of her maternal uncle, a man named Donald Vance. Vance had been collecting Maya’s survivor benefits while subjecting the young girl to severe neglect and physical abuse.

When officers went to Vance's house three streets away, they found the home in squalor. Vance was arrested on multiple charges of severe child endangerment and felony neglect.

When the social worker, a kind woman named Mrs. Henderson, explained that Maya would need to be placed into temporary emergency foster care while the state sorted out her legal custody, Maya panicked. She lunged forward and wrapped her small arms around my waist, burying her face in my sweater.

"Please, no! Don't make me go with strangers!" she screamed, her voice filled with raw agony. "I want to stay here! I'll be good, I won't take up space in the bed! Please!"

Lily ran over, tears streaming down her face, grabbing Maya's hand. "Mom, Dad, please don't let her leave! She can sleep in my bed every night! I don't care if it's too small!"

Looking at the two girls holding each other so tightly, Michael looked at me, his eyes moist. He nodded softly, giving me the unspoken confirmation we both felt in our souls.

I wrapped my arms around both girls and looked up at Mrs. Henderson. "We are registered emergency foster caregivers through the county network, Mrs. Henderson," I declared firmly. "Maya stays here. Right now. Right with us."
