Chapter 7 - The Final Verdict

The final custody hearing took place in a high-ceilinged courtroom in downtown San Jose. The air inside was heavy with tension. Donald Vance sat across the room in a dark suit, looking disheveled and hostile, his eyes occasionally darting toward us with bitterness.
Our attorney presented a mountain of evidence: medical reports detailing Maya’s previous severe malnutrition, psychological evaluations outlining her severe trauma under Vance's care, and testimony from police officers who had witnessed the uninhabitable conditions of his home.
When it was time for the judge—a stern, grey-haired woman named Justice Eleanor Vance (no relation)—to deliver her ruling, the entire room fell dead silent.
Justice Vance adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench, her gaze shifting between Donald Vance and our family.
"Child custody decisions are among the most weight-bearing responsibilities this court holds," Justice Vance began, her voice echoing off the paneled walls. "The law prioritizes biological family preservation whenever possible. However, the law's primary duty is the safety, emotional well-being, and future of the child."
She looked directly at Donald Vance. "Mr. Vance, your history of severe neglect, emotional abuse, and failure to provide basic human shelter for this young girl is appalling. Your sudden desire to retain custody is clearly motivated by financial interests rather than genuine paternal care."
She then turned her eyes to Michael and me. "On the other hand, Mr. and Mrs. Collins have opened their home, their hearts, and provided an environment of safety, healing, and undeniable love. Maya has flourished under their care."

Justice Vance struck her gavel firmly against the wooden block. "It is the order of this court that Donald Vance's parental rights are hereby permanently terminated. Full legal guardianship and custody of Maya are granted to Michael and Sarah Collins, with immediate eligibility for formal adoption."
A collective gasp of relief broke out in the room. I covered my face with my hands, crying tears of sheer joy, while Michael pulled me into a tight embrace. Maya looked up at us, her small face breaking into the radiant smile we had worked so hard to protect.
