Chapter 7 - Small Steps, Big Victories

Six months had passed since the night Madeline returned from London. The corporate battles were won, the abusers were awaiting trial in maximum-security facilities, and the Buckhead mansion had been sold—Madeline refused to let her son spend another second in a place filled with such dark memories.
Instead, she had purchased a beautiful, sun-drenched estate in the rolling hills of Savannah, Georgia. The house was surrounded by massive oak trees draped in Spanish moss, with a massive backyard that led down to a peaceful, private river bank. The house was filled with warmth, soft colors, and the constant sound of gentle classical music.
Liam’s transformation was slow, but it was a miracle in motion.
Thanks to an intensive rehabilitation program designed by Dr. Evelyn Vance, Liam had regained his healthy weight. His cheeks were chubby again, his skin glowing with health, and his matted hair had been replaced by soft, golden curls that bounced when he walked.
He was no longer crawling on all fours. He walked upright, though he still walked with a slight hesitation, always checking to ensure Madeline was nearby.
On a warm spring afternoon, Madeline sat on a blanket in the backyard, reviewing corporate documents on her tablet. Vanguard Logistics had seen a record-breaking quarter under her sole leadership, its stock price soaring to historic highs. But Madeline barely cared about the numbers. Her eyes were constantly darting to the center of the yard, where Liam was playing with a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby, a gift Madeline had bought him for his fifth birthday.
Liam was holding a small, red rubber ball. The puppy wagged its tail enthusiastically, barking softly.
A year ago, a barking dog would have sent Liam into a catatonic state of terror. But now, he simply giggled—a sound so beautiful and pure it brought tears to Madeline's eyes every single time she heard it.
"Look, Mommy!" Liam called out, his voice clear and bright. "Barnaby wants the ball!"
"Throw it, sweetie!" Madeline encouraged, leaning forward with a massive smile. "Show Barnaby how far you can throw!"
Liam threw the ball with his tiny arm. It bounced a few feet into the grass. The puppy immediately chased after it, tripping over its own paws before grabbing the ball and running back to Liam, dropping it at the boy's feet.
Liam erupted into a fit of joyous laughter, throwing his arms around the puppy’s neck. "Good boy, Barnaby! Good boy!"
Dr. Evelyn Vance stepped out onto the back porch, holding two glasses of fresh lemonade. She walked down to the blanket and sat beside Madeline, watching the beautiful scene.
"Look at him, Madeline," Evelyn said, her voice filled with professional pride and deep affection. "Six months ago, he couldn't speak, he couldn't walk, and he couldn't trust a human touch. Today, he is a normal, happy five-year-old boy who knows he is profoundly loved."
Madeline rested her head on Evelyn’s shoulder, her eyes never leaving her son. "He still has nightmares sometimes, Evelyn. Sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night crying, asking if he has to go back under the table."

"And what do you tell him?" Evelyn asked gently.
"I tell him that the table is gone," Madeline whispered. "I tell him that the monsters are locked in a cage where they can never hurt him again. And I tell him that Mommy is his shield, forever."
