Chapter 4 - The Legal Avalanche

The morning sun had barely risen over Atlanta when the glass doors of Vance & Sterling Legal Enterprises flew open. Madeline walked in, her stride purposeful, wearing a sharp, tailored black suit. Behind her walked Arthur Pendelton, the most feared corporate and family law attorney in the state of Georgia, a man who charged by the minute and had never lost a high-stakes asset battle.
Waiting in the main conference room were Jeffrey and his mother, Noelle. They looked exhausted, their clothes rumpled after spending the night in a mid-tier airport hotel. Cynthia was noticeably absent, likely hiding from the impending fallout.
Jeffrey stood up immediately as Madeline entered. "Madeline! Thank God. Look, we need to handle this rationally. You can't just throw us out of our home. I am the CEO of Vanguard Logistics! If the board finds out about this domestic dispute, the stock will plummet. We both lose!"
Madeline didn't take a seat. She remained standing at the head of the table, looking down at him as if he were a bug on a windshield. Arthur Pendelton took his seat, opening a thick leather briefcase and spreading out a mountain of documents.
"Sit down, Jeffrey," Arthur said, his voice like grinding stones. "And speak only when spoken to. Your wife is not here to negotiate. She is here to dictate terms."
Noelle puffed out her chest, trying to maintain her aristocratic demeanor. "This is ridiculous! A wife cannot just evict her husband. The law protects martial property. That house belongs to both of them!"
"The Buckhead estate," Arthur countered smoothly, sliding a document across the table, "was purchased entirely with funds from the Vance Family Trust, established three decades before this marriage. Furthermore, Jeffrey signed a strict prenuptial agreement. Section 14, Clause B: In the event of confirmed infidelity, the perpetrator forfeits all rights to marital assets, spousal support, and any claims to properties held under the Vance Trust."
Jeffrey's eyes widened as he looked at the document. "Infidelity? You have no proof of that! Cynthia was just a houseguest—"
Madeline slammed her hand on the table. The sharp crack made both Jeffrey and Noelle jump.
"Do not lie to me in front of my counsel, Jeffrey," Madeline said, her voice dripping with venom. "I have the security footage of you and Cynthia in my bed while my son was crying in the hallway. I have the DNA profile of Austin, which you stupidly uploaded to a public genealogy database last year, proving he is your biological child. And most importantly, I have the medical report from Dr. Evelyn Vance detailing the systematic starvation and physical abuse of my son."
She leaned forward, her face inches from Jeffrey's. "You thought I was in London working myself to the bone just for the company? I was building the international framework that makes Vanguard Logistics valuable. Yesterday, before I boarded my flight, I transferred all intellectual property rights, international client contracts, and logistics software licenses out of Vanguard Logistics and into my private holding firm."
Jeffrey went entirely pale. "You... you stripped the company?"
"Vanguard Logistics is now an empty shell, saddled with twenty million dollars in debt that you signed for under your personal guarantee last quarter," Madeline said, a terrifying smile appearing on her face. "By noon today, the board will vote to terminate you for gross negligence and ethical violations. You are bankrupt, Jeffrey. You are completely, utterly ruined."
Noelle stood up, screaming. "You monster! You can't do this to my son! What about Austin? He is an innocent child!"
"Austin is innocent, which is why he will live with his mother in whatever cramped, miserable apartment she can afford on a secretary's unemployment benefits," Madeline shot back coldly. "But as for you, Noelle... and you, Jeffrey... the corporate ruin is just the appetizer."
Arthur Pendelton stood up, adjusting his tie. "At 10:00 AM, a formal criminal complaint for felony child cruelty and criminal neglect will be filed with the District Attorney's office. The evidence has already been delivered to the chief of police, who happens to be a close associate of the Vance family."
Jeffrey dropped into his chair, covering his face with his hands, weeping openly. Noelle collapsed beside him, her arrogance entirely shattered.

"Please, Madeline," Jeffrey begged through his tears. "Don't do this. I'll sign the divorce papers. I'll give up custody. I'll never see Liam again. Just don't send me to prison."
Madeline picked up her briefcase, turning her back on them. "You should have thought about prison before you forced my four-year-old son to eat off the floor."
