Chapter 1 - The Monsters in the Living Room

After spending two years on an overseas business assignment, I opened the front door and found my four-year-old son filthy and trembling beneath the dining table while my mother-in-law fed my husband's mistress's baby. My husband simply said, “Keep him away from the child.” I didn't scream. I quietly pulled out my phone... and one recording changed everything.

“Don't let that boy sit at the table. He's gotten used to eating on the floor.”

Madeline froze in the doorway, one hand still gripping her suitcase as her heart pounded against her ribs.

She had landed in Atlanta that very afternoon after spending two years in London, where she had led the international expansion of her husband's company. She had slept very little, worked far too much, and reminded herself every night that every sacrifice was worth it because her son, Liam, would have a secure future.

When she left, Liam had just turned two. He stumbled when he walked, laughed every time he said “Mommy,” and fell asleep holding her finger.

Now he was four.

But the child before her, inside the spotless white living room of their mansion in Buckhead, didn't look like a four-year-old at all.

He was on the floor barefoot, wearing filthy clothes. His hair was matted from not being bathed, and his arms were so thin they looked like sticks. He wasn't walking. He crawled on all fours after a plastic ball, making soft, broken sounds that resembled the frightened whimpers of a wounded animal.

Madeline felt the world collapse beneath her.

On the main sofa, her mother-in-law, Noelle, was feeding three-milk cake to another little boy. He was chubby, clean, dressed in a linen shirt, and happily called Noelle “Grandma.”

Beside them sat Jeffrey, Madeline's husband, staring at his phone. Leaning comfortably against his shoulder was a young woman in a fitted dress with a smug smile.

Madeline recognized her immediately.

Cynthia.

The secretary Jeffrey had hired shortly before Madeline left for London.

Cynthia glanced at the child on the floor and laughed quietly.

“Look, Jeffrey. Your little animal is putting on another show.”

Jeffrey didn't even bother looking up.

“Keep him away from Austin. He'll scare him.”

Madeline's suitcase slipped from her hand and crashed onto the floor.

The sound made everyone turn around.

Jeffrey went pale.

“Madeline... you didn't tell us you were coming home.”

Noelle frowned as though she were the one being inconvenienced.

“Showing up unannounced like this is very rude.”

Madeline didn't answer. Her eyes never left Liam.

She took one slow step toward him. “My sweetheart...”

The little boy instantly recoiled, scrambling backward on his hands and knees until he disappeared beneath the coffee table. His empty eyes stared at her in terror, as though she were someone dangerous.

Madeline dropped to her knees.

“Liam... it's Mommy.”

He let out a frightened cry and covered his face with both hands.

The woman who had crossed the world dreaming of hugging her son had to bite her lip to stop herself from screaming.

Jeffrey stood awkwardly.

“He's been... strange for a while. My mom thinks something's wrong with him. We were planning to take him to see someone.”

“Something's wrong with him?” Madeline whispered.

Cynthia casually brushed her hair behind her ear.

“Oh, don't be so dramatic. We already do enough just by letting him stay here. Austin deserves a peaceful home.”

Noelle added with chilling indifference,

“Your son frightens our guests. If you care so much about him, then you deal with him yourself. Just don't ruin our lives.”

Madeline looked at every one of them. Her husband's mistress living in her home. Her mother-in-law lovingly feeding another woman's child. Her husband unable to meet her eyes.

In that moment, she realized the worst part wasn't that she had come home too late.

It was discovering that for the past two years, her little boy had been living through hell...

And the monsters had been sitting comfortably in her own living room.
