That evening, after Leo was tucked safely into bed with his favorite bedtime story read aloud, I stood on our balcony, sipping a cup of chamomile tea and looking out at the glittering skyline of the city.
The twinkling lights below stretched out infinitely, symbolizing all the possibilities that lay ahead. I thought back to that stormy night two years ago—standing in that suffocating kitchen, staring at a hollowed-out lobster shell while listening to cruel laughter and watching my little boy offer me a scrap of food from the floor.
