Chapter 3 - The Panic at the Manor

Back at the suburban house, the morning sun brought no warmth, only a harsh awakening to reality.

Carol had woken up expecting to sip her morning espresso and browse online furniture catalogs for Megan’s new nursery. Instead, she walked downstairs to find Ryan pacing frantically in the kitchen, his phone pressed to his ear, his face pale and slick with sweat.

"What do you mean, account frozen?" Ryan roared into the receiver, speaking to the bank manager. "That’s my company's operating capital! Check the secondary signature—"

"Mr. Miller," the manager's voice was ice-cold over the loudspeaker, "the primary account holder, Lauren Miller, has reported unauthorized document tampering and forgery under federal banking regulations. All lines of credit associated with that commercial property have been permanently suspended pending a fraud investigation."

The phone clicked dead.

Megan waddled into the kitchen, wrapped in a silk bathrobe, holding her swollen stomach. "Ryan, what is going on? I tried to use my card to order breakfast delivery, and it was declined. The bakery said our corporate card was flagged!"

Carol gasped, clutching her pearls. "Declined? How can a corporate card be declined? Call her! Call that ungrateful wife of yours and tell her to fix it immediately! We have bills to pay, contractors waiting, and Megan needs her specialized prenatal supplements!"

Ryan dropped his phone onto the kitchen island, his hands shaking. "She’s not answering, Mom. And... and she took her bags. Her closet is empty. Leo’s toys are gone."

"Gone?" Carol shrieked, her face turning crimson. "Where could she go at midnight? She has nowhere without us! She’s just throwing a hysterical tantrum because we ate her precious lobsters! Does she realize who feeds this family? Does she realize her little boutique salon barely covers her own expenses?"

Ryan stared at his mother, the horrifying realization finally dawning on him. For years, Carol had convinced him that Lauren was just a lucky hairdresser who depended entirely on the Miller family's social standing. They had completely forgotten the foundational truth: Lauren didn't depend on them. They had been secretly living off the shadow of her hidden wealth, and Ryan had just tried to steal the golden goose.

"Mom," Ryan whispered, his voice trembling. "She didn't run away because of the lobsters. She ran away because she found out about the bank transfer."

Carol froze. "She... she knows?"

Before Ryan could answer, the front doorbell chimed loudly. It wasn't the delivery driver. It was two uniformed police officers and a process server holding thick legal folders.
