Chapter 7 - Rebuilding Our World

With the legal battles finalized, the divorce decree was expedited and granted by the court within the month.
The house where Carol and Ryan lived was seized by creditors and put up for auction to satisfy commercial debts. Carol was forced to move into a modest, cramped senior studio apartment across town, her luxurious lifestyle reduced to memories. Ryan was placed on corporate probation after accepting a plea deal for lesser financial infractions, working long, grueling hours as a mid-level project manager for a competing firm just to pay off his mounting legal fees and court-ordered restitution.
Megan’s relationship with Ryan dissolved completely before her baby was even born, leaving her to navigate motherhood with her own support system while regretting the day she ever mocked my hard work over luxury lobsters.
Meanwhile, Leo and I were thriving.
My salon business expanded into a second location downtown, and my commercial real estate portfolio continued to generate stable, independent success. But more important than any business metric was the atmosphere in our new home.
Every evening, our penthouse was filled with the warm, inviting scent of home-cooked meals, laughter, and genuine peace. Leo no longer looked over his shoulder nervously or whispered apologetic secrets. His eyes sparkled with the bright, carefree joy that every five-year-old deserved.
One evening, while we were unpacking a box of old keepsakes, Leo pulled out a small, odd object wrapped in a clean tissue.
He held it up, tilting his head. "Mommy, do you remember this?"
It was the tiny, lint-covered scrap of lobster meat he had saved for me from the floor weeks ago. I had carefully saved it in a keepsake box, keeping it as a reminder of the exact moment I chose my son's love over a toxic life.
Tears prickled my eyes, but this time, they were tears of profound gratitude.
I knelt down, wrapping my arms tightly around my little boy. "I remember, sweetie. It was the most precious gift anyone ever gave me."

Leo smiled brightly, wrapping his arms around my neck. "I love you, Mommy. Forever."
"I love you too, my brave boy. Forever and always."
