Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

The golden rays of the morning sun poured through the sheer curtains of our penthouse bedroom, waking me gently on a quiet Sunday morning.

Before my alarm even had a chance to ring, two small arms wrapped tightly around my neck, and a mop of messy brown hair buried itself into my shoulder.

"Happy Sunday, Mommy! Wake up! It's pancake day!" Leo whispered excitedly in my ear, giggling.

I laughed, rolling over and wrapping my arms around my growing boy, burying my face in his hair, breathing in the sweet scent of vanilla and childhood.

"Alright, master chef, I'm up! But only if you promise to help me flip the pancakes this time," I teased, sitting up.

"Deal!" Leo cheered, scrambling out of bed and racing toward the kitchen with his superhero pajamas fluttering behind him.

As I walked out into our sun-drenched kitchen, the aroma of maple syrup and fresh fruit filled the air. There was no cold rice here. No hollowed-out shells. No bitter mother-in-law yelling from a couch, and no entitled husband demanding credit for my hard work.

There was only warmth, safety, abundance, and boundless love.

I stood by the kitchen counter, flipping golden-brown pancakes while Leo proudly measured out chocolate chips into a ceramic bowl, humming his favorite song. As I looked down at my son—happy, secure, and cherished—I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that we had won.

We hadn't just survived the storm; we had built our own sunshine. And our happily ever after was only just beginning.
