Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn
By the end of the first week, the Miller family's facade of upper-middle-class luxury completely dissolved.
Without the influx of cash from my commercial properties and the fraudulent loan, Ryan’s construction company defaulted on three major commercial contracts. Subcontractors swarmed their office demanding back pay. Their utility services were cut off by Friday afternoon, forcing Carol and Ryan to sit in a sweltering, powerless house with dying phones and rotting food in an unplugged refrigerator.
Megan, realizing that Ryan was not the wealthy provider he had pretended to be, packed her designer bags and retreated to her parents' modest apartment across town, leaving Ryan and Carol to drown in their mounting debt alone.
Meanwhile, Leo and I were settled in a bright, secure penthouse apartment overlooking the city park. For the first time in years, my home felt peaceful. Leo giggled as we baked chocolate chip cookies together in our new kitchen—no scolding, no cold rice, no cruel comments from a bitter mother-in-law.
My attorney called on Saturday morning with an update.
"Lauren, Ryan and Carol's legal counsel has contacted us. They are desperate for a settlement. Ryan’s company is facing bankruptcy liquidation, and Carol is facing potential accessory charges for her role in the forgery scheme. They want to negotiate terms immediately."
"What are their terms?" I asked, sipping my morning tea.
"They have none left," my lawyer chuckled. "They are begging. They want you to lift the asset freezes, drop the criminal forgery charges, and agree to a quiet, mediated divorce where Ryan relinquishes all claims to your commercial properties in exchange for avoiding prison time."

I looked out the window, watching Leo chase pigeons down on the plaza below, clutching his little toy truck.
"Tell them I accept the property release and sole custody terms," I instructed. "As for the criminal charges... let the state prosecutor decide. Actions have consequences."
