Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed 1:15 AM. Lily was still fast asleep, breathing softly. Ethan sat at the mahogany desk in the corner of Suite 904, the old photograph and the ledger laid out before him under the amber glow of a desk lamp.
The weight of the revelation pressed down on his shoulders with crushing force. For three years, he had blamed himself—wondering if he should have insisted she stay home, wondering if his financial struggles at the time had pushed her to take on high-risk consulting work. Now, the bitter reality emerged from the shadows: Sarah hadn't just been working; she had been murdered to cover up corporate corruption at the highest level.
A soft, distinct knock echoed at the suite door.
Ethan stood up immediately, sliding a heavy brass letter opener from the desk into his back pocket. He approached the door, checked the peephole, and saw Sterling standing alone in the hallway, looking pale, disheveled, and desperate.
Ethan unlocked the door and pulled it open. Sterling stumbled inward, casting frantic glances down the empty, dimly lit corridor before shutting the heavy door behind him with a soft click.
"Mr. Vance," Sterling whispered, his usual polished arrogance entirely gone. "I know how this looks. I know what Lupita must have told you."
"She told me everything, Sterling," Ethan said coldly, crossing his arms. "She told me about the embezzlement, the smuggling ring, the audit, and the man named Viktor who drove the truck that killed my wife."
Sterling buried his face in his hands, trembling visibly. He sank onto the edge of a velvet armchair, defeated.
"I didn't want her killed, Mr. Vance," Sterling choked out, his voice thick with panic and remorse. "God as my witness, I never wanted Sarah to die. When she uncovered the financial leaks, I tried to convince her to take a massive payoff and keep quiet. But your wife had a spine of steel. She told me she had already uploaded encrypted copies of all the ledger files to an off-site cloud storage vault with a dead-man switch set to release to federal authorities if anything happened to her."
"Then why did she crash?" Ethan demanded, stepping closer, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. "If the federal authorities were going to get the files anyway, why hunt her down?"
"Because she hadn't uploaded the physical evidence yet—the hard drives containing the audio recordings of our board meetings and the shipping manifests of the smuggling operation," Sterling confessed, looking up with tear-filled eyes. "Viktor acted on his own accord. He panicked when she fled the property. He thought if he recovered her briefcase, he could salvage the operation. When the crash happened on the highway, Viktor searched her wreckage, but he couldn't find the hard drives anywhere."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "Where are they?"
Sterling swallowed hard. "She gave them to someone else for safekeeping before she walked out of this hotel for the last time. She gave them to Lupita."
