Chapter 2 - The Whispers of Suite 904

The opulent crystal chandeliers of the Grand Regent Hotel lobby suddenly felt suffocatingly bright. The ambient chatter of wealthy gala guests drifted softly from the adjacent ballroom, clinking crystal glasses and low string quartets blending into a bizarre, high-society soundtrack for the sudden tension freezing the front desk.
Mr. Sterling, the general manager whose pristine three-piece suit usually projected an aura of unshakeable corporate authority, swallowed hard. His eyes darted nervously between Ethan Vance—the quiet, unassuming man holding a sleeping six-year-old child—and Lupita, the veteran housekeeper whose hands were now trembling against the edge of her service cart.
"Mr. Vance," Sterling stammered, stepping forward with a forced, practiced smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Please, let us get you and young Lily up to Suite 904 immediately. You must be exhausted from your travels. The journey from Seattle... well, it's a long one. Let us take your bags."
"Don't touch my backpack," Ethan said. His voice was not loud, but it carried an icy, absolute gravity that stopped Sterling dead in his tracks.
Ethan shifted Lily slightly, feeling her warm, steady breathing against his collarbone. She was too young to understand the dark undercurrents swirling around them, too innocent to know that the photograph clutched in her small fingers was a map to a hidden past her father had spent three agonizing years trying to piece together.
Ethan turned his gaze back to Lupita. The older woman looked as though she had seen a ghost. Her skin, usually a warm, rich brown, had turned ashen. She looked down at the floor, her lips moving silently as if reciting a prayer or steeling herself for an inevitable reckoning.
"You said I wasn't supposed to find that photograph," Ethan said, keeping his tone measured. "And you said the manager cannot know Sarah left it for me. Why, Lupita? What did Sarah know?"
Sterling bristled, stepping between Ethan and the housekeeper. "Mr. Vance, please. This is an internal staffing matter. Lupita has been under a great deal of stress lately. We can discuss hotel policies and historical staff records tomorrow morning after you've rested. Right now, our primary concern is your comfort as the principal shareholder and owner of this establishment."
"My father built this hotel," Ethan said coldly, locking eyes with Sterling. "He left it to me, and when Sarah died, I nearly lost my mind trying to keep our lives from shattering. For three years, I thought her death was a tragic, random accident on a dark stretch of highway. But looking at these seven words on the back of this photo—Find Lupita. She knows why I was followed—tells me that my wife was terrified. And someone was hunting her."
The two receptionists who had moments earlier mocked Ethan’s worn leather jacket stood frozen behind the marble counter, staring at the floor, terrified of making a single sound. They now realized the man they had tried to turn away was the ultimate boss of the entire corporation.
Lupita looked up slowly. Tears welled in her dark, kind eyes. She reached out, her fingers trembling, and gently touched the edge of Lily’s small backpack.
"Not here, Mr. Vance," Lupita whispered, glancing warily at the security cameras mounted in the corners of the grand lobby. "Not in the open. Mr. Sterling... Mr. Sterling has eyes and ears everywhere. If you want the truth about what happened to Sarah during her final months working undercover in this hotel, you must come to the service quarters on the sub-level. Tonight. After midnight."
Sterling’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson. "Lupita, you are out of line! One more word of these absurd conspiracy theories and you’ll be fired on the spot, pension forfeited!"
May you like
"Fired?" Lupita let out a bitter, dry laugh, shaking her head. "Mr. Sterling, you can't fire me for telling a grieving husband the truth. Not when the truth is the only thing keeping me breathing at night. You can take my job, but you cannot take my conscience."
Ethan didn't hesitate. "Lead the way, Lupita. We're going to Suite 904 first to get Lily settled, and then we have a long conversation."
