Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Suite 904 was a sprawling penthouse suite overlooking the glittering night skyline of the city. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed a breathtaking view of distant skyscrapers and twinkling traffic arteries. Yet, inside the suite, the atmosphere felt heavy, almost claustrophobic.

Ethan gently laid Lily down on the king-sized velvet bed, slipping off her tiny shoes and pulling a soft duvet over her shoulders. She stirred for a moment, murmuring her mother's name, before sinking back into a deep, exhaustion-induced sleep. Ethan kissed her forehead, whispering softly, "Daddy's here, sweet girl. I've got you."

He turned around to find Lupita standing quietly by the doorway, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger that looked decades old.

"How did you know Sarah?" Ethan asked, keeping his voice low so as not to wake Lily as he walked out onto the private foyer area of the suite, closing the heavy mahogany door halfway.

Lupita clutched the ledger to her chest like a shield. "I didn't just know her, Mr. Vance. I trained her. When your father passed away and ownership of the Grand Regent was temporarily tied up in complex estate trusts, the board brought in an external management firm to audit the financial books. That was five years ago. Your wife, Sarah, was an exceptional forensic accountant. She was hired under an alias—Sarah Jenkins—to investigate a series of multi-million-dollar discrepancies in the corporate accounts."

Ethan frowned, his mind racing. "An audit? Sarah never mentioned an audit. She told me she was doing freelance consulting work from home."

"She had to lie to protect you," Lupita explained, her voice cracking slightly. "Because the people she was investigating weren't just low-level bookkeepers. They were members of the executive board working in tandem with Mr. Sterling. They were systematically bleeding the Grand Regent dry through shell companies and fraudulent vendor invoices."

Lupita opened the heavy ledger, flipping to a yellowed page filled with columns of neat, handwritten numbers and red ink annotations.

"Sarah was brilliant," Lupita continued, tracing a finger down a column of figures. "Within three months, she mapped out the entire embezzlement scheme. But right before she was scheduled to present her final report to the independent board trustees, she discovered something much darker than financial fraud. She found records linking the hotel's luxury suites to an illicit international smuggling ring operating through the VIP guest network."

Ethan felt a cold shiver run down his spine. "A smuggling ring? Using the hotel?"

"Yes," Lupita nodded grimly. "And the moment Sarah realized the scale of it, she knew she was in grave danger. That's when she came to me. We hid in the laundry linen room for hours while security guards searched the corridors looking for her. One of those guards was Viktor Vance—no relation to you, but a brutal enforcer hired directly by the executive board."

"Viktor," Ethan repeated, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "The police report from the night of the crash... they said a semi-truck ran Sarah off the wet mountain highway. They ruled it a tragic accident caused by poor visibility and slick roads."

"It wasn't an accident, Mr. Vance," Lupita said, looking him dead in the eye. "Viktor was driving that semi-truck. I saw him tracking her movements through the hotel's security monitoring station three days before she died. She left that photograph with me on her last day here, begging me to hide it until someone trustworthy could find it. She said if anything happened to her, it would lead you straight to the truth."
