Chapter 3 - Shadows of Betrayal

When William stepped out of the conference room, his hands were trembling in his coat pockets. The cold reality of Charles Blackwood’s ambition and Rebecca’s compliance hit him harder than the winter wind outside. They were moving to oust him as CEO of Callaway Investments, using his devotion to his dying daughter as proof of "incapacity."
He walked back toward Grace’s room, needing the anchor of her presence to keep from falling apart.
As he approached Room 412, he paused. A young boy in an oversized coat was standing by Grace’s bedside, holding her hand, his head bowed in deep concentration.
William did not shout or rush in. There was something solemn about the scene that stayed his hand. He watched through the glass as the boy finished his prayer, patted Grace’s hand softly, and turned to leave.
When Leo pulled back the glass door, he froze, finding himself face-to-face with the towering, tired figure of William Callaway.
"I'm sorry, mister," Leo blurted out quickly, clutching his frayed sleeves. "I didn't steal anything! I just... I just come to check on her sometimes."
William looked down at the frightened boy. The anger that usually burned inside him melted into a profound confusion. "Who are you, son?"

"Leo. My mom works downstairs." Leo swallowed hard. "I just didn't want her to be lonely. My grandpa said nobody should have to go through the dark by themselves."
William looked past Leo to Grace’s hand. He saw the small wooden bead held gently in her fist. Tears, hot and unexpected, pricked at the corners of his eyes. While lawyers and executives were measuring his daughter’s life in liabilities and shares, a stranger's child was giving her the only thing that truly mattered: pure, unselfish hope.
