Chapter 2 - The Boy at the Threshold

While the adults waged their silent war of words in the conference room, the air inside Pediatric ICU Room 412 was thick with the hum of monitors. Grace Callaway lay perfectly still beneath a white cotton blanket. Her pale face was framed by golden hair that her father smoothed out every night.

Standing just outside her glass door was Leo.

Leo was eight years old, but his eyes carried the weight of someone much older. His jacket was two sizes too big, frayed at the cuffs, and his worn sneakers bore the dried mud of the South End streets. Leo was not supposed to be on the fourth floor. His mother worked the night shift in the hospital’s laundry department, and after school, Leo would slip past the security desk to find a quiet corner to read or draw.

For the past three weeks, Leo had watched Grace through the glass. At first, he simply wondered why a girl with so many stuffed animals on her window sill never played with them. Later, he learned from nurses' whispers that she was the daughter of the wealthy man who walked the halls like a ghost.

Leo didn't care about the wealth. He only knew what it felt like to be alone in a cold room.

That morning, as the snow fell thicker outside, Leo stepped inside Room 412. The quiet beep of the heart monitor paced his breathing. He walked up to the side of the bed, reaching into his pocket to pull out a smooth, polished wooden bead—a small keepsake his grandfather had given him before passing away.

He placed the bead gently into Grace’s motionless palm, wrapping her small fingers around it.

"My grandpa said when you're lost in a bad dream, you just gotta hold onto something real," Leo whispered softly, his voice trembling slightly in the sterile air. "You're not alone, Grace. Just wake up when you're ready."

He closed his eyes, bowed his head, and began to pray—not with formal words from a church book, but with the raw, earnest hope of a child who refused to accept that light could simply vanish.
