Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

The sun rose over the Moretti estate the following morning, casting golden rays across manicured lawns and marble terraces that looked entirely untouched by the violence of the previous day. The cleanup crew had worked through the night, erasing every trace of the siege, leaving the mansion gleaming and secure.
Inside the grand dining hall, a massive breakfast was laid out across the mahogany table. But instead of sitting at opposite ends as he usually did, Alejandro sat at the head of the table with me seated right next to him in a booster chair, while Mama sat across from us, sipping hot tea with a genuine, relaxed smile for the first time in years.
“Eat your eggs, Emma,” Alejandro instructed gently, sliding a small plate of scrambled eggs toward me. “You need to grow big and strong if you’re going to be my personal bodyguard.”
I giggled, poking my fork into the eggs. “I already saved your life once! I’m a great bodyguard!”
“The best I’ve ever had,” Alejandro admitted, a warm, booming laugh escaping his lips.
Over the next few weeks, life in the Moretti mansion transformed completely. The terrifying, cold-blooded mafia boss everyone feared in the underworld began to soften, at least within the walls of his home. He still ran his global empire with an iron fist, ensuring that no rival syndicate or traitor would ever dare test his authority again, but his evenings were now reserved for reading bedtime stories, playing board games on the parlor floor, and teaching me how to draw blue rabbits.
The board of directors, once terrified of Alejandro’s ruthless purges, quickly realized that the syndicate had never been stronger or more unified. With Viktor Vance and his co-conspirators permanently locked away in maximum-security federal custody, the remaining capos respected Alejandro more than ever—not just for his terrifying power, but for his absolute unwavering loyalty to those who saved him.
One sunny afternoon, a few months after the incident, Alejandro walked into the east wing garden where Mama and I were planting flowers in small pots. He was wearing a casual gray sweater instead of his usual black suit, his dark hair ruffled by the gentle breeze.
He knelt down beside my small plastic gardening shovel, watching as I clumsily piled dirt into a bright yellow pot.
“Emma,” Alejandro said, his voice carrying a quiet, profound seriousness. “Do you remember what you told me the day you saved my life? When you said monsters need to breathe too?”
I stopped digging and looked up at him, nodding slowly.
“I want you to know something,” Alejandro continued, taking my small, dirt-smudged hand in his large, scarred palm. “Because of you, I don't want to be a monster anymore. I want to be someone you and your mother can always look up to and trust.”
Mama looked over at him, her eyes glistening with emotion, and smiled warmly.
“You’re not a monster, Alejandro,” Mama said softly. “You’re our protector.”
Alejandro smiled back, a genuine, peaceful expression that transformed his rugged face completely. He pulled a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box from his pocket and set it gently on the garden bench.

“What’s that?” I asked, tilting my head.
“A token,” Alejandro replied, opening the box to reveal a delicate silver necklace shaped like a small, leaping rabbit with a tiny blue sapphire eye. “For the bravest little girl in the world, and the official guardian of the Moretti estate.”
