Chapter 8 - The Clearing Smoke

The silence that followed Alejandro’s words was absolute. Viktor Vance stood frozen in the center of the marble foyer, the red laser dots dancing across his chest like drops of blood. His hired mercenaries, realizing they were completely surrounded and outgunned by an unseen sniper network, slowly lowered their weapons and raised their hands in surrender.

“Drop your weapons and get them out of my sight,” Alejandro commanded without breaking eye contact with Viktor.

Within seconds, loyal Moretti guards swarmed the foyer. They disarmed the mercenaries with swift, practiced efficiency, throwing them onto the marble floor before hauling them away toward the subterranean holding cells. Two burly guards grabbed Viktor by the shoulders, wrenching his arms behind his back.

Viktor thrashed weakly, spitting blood and venom. “You can't do this, Alejandro! The board will never stand for this! You’re tearing the syndicate apart!”

“The syndicate was rotting from the inside out,” Alejandro replied coldly, stepping closer to his former partner. “And today, I cut out the cancer. Take him to the vault. We’ll let the federal authorities pick through his corporate wreckage after I’ve extracted every last name on his payroll.”

As Viktor was dragged away, screaming curses into the echoing hall, the tension in the mansion finally began to dissipate. The heavy smoke from the skirmish slowly drifted out through the automated ventilation systems, and the sound of crackling fire outside was quickly extinguished by the estate’s automated sprinkler system.

Alejandro exhaled a long, heavy breath, his broad shoulders dropping slightly as the weight of the siege lifted. He turned and walked up the grand staircase toward the panic room entrance in the east wing.

When the heavy blast doors hissed open, Mama and I stepped out. Mama was still shaking, clutching my hand so tightly my fingers ached. When she saw Alejandro walking toward us—weary, blood-stained, but completely victorious—she let out a ragged gasp of relief.

“It’s over, Elena,” Alejandro said softly, offering a reassuring nod. “The estate is secure. No one will ever threaten you or Emma again.”

I broke away from Mama’s grip, running across the polished floor as fast as my little legs could carry me. I didn't care about the blood on his coat or the lingering smell of smoke. I threw my arms around his leg, burying my face in his heavy trousers, still clutching my stuffed rabbit in my other hand.

Alejandro froze for a fraction of a second, clearly unaccustomed to such open, unreserved affection. Then, a slow, gentle smile broke across his rugged face. He knelt down, scooped me up into his arms, and held me tightly against his chest.

“You’re safe now, little hero,” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.

Mama stepped closer, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She bowed her head respectfully, though Alejandro quickly waved a hand, stopping her.

“No more bowing, Elena,” Alejandro said firmly. “From this day forward, you are family. And Emma... Emma is my daughter in every way that matters.”
