Chapter 2 - The Hidden Lens

The sharp hiss of the automatic syringe echoed in the sudden, heavy silence of the study. Alejandro Moretti drew in a ragged, whistling breath, his chest expanding as the epinephrine flooded his bloodstream, forcing his constricting airways wide open. Color slowly crept back into his ashen skin, replacing the terrifying purple of suffocation with a fierce, burning flush.

He didn't scream, and he didn't cry out. He simply lay on the Turkish rug, his dark, piercing eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the surrounding bodyguards shift uneasily on their boots.

“Boss!” Guard Marcus dropped to one knee, reaching out to help his employer up. “Are you alright? Who did this?”

Alejandro ignored him. His gaze remained fixed on me, his breathing settling into a deep, controlled rhythm. Slowly, deliberately, the most feared man in the city pushed himself up to a sitting position, leaning against the massive mahogany desk. He looked down at the orange plastic tip still resting against his trouser leg, then up at my trembling small hands clutching my pink rabbit backpack.

“You...” Alejandro’s voice was a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the quiet room. “You saved my life.”

“You couldn't breathe,” I whispered, clutching my stuffed rabbit tighter. “My mama says when someone can't breathe, you have to help them if you can.”

Before Alejandro could reply, Marcus whipped his head toward the bookshelf. His face had drained of all color, his eyes wide with stark panic.

“Marcus,” Alejandro said, his tone dangerously calm. “What are you looking at?”

“Nothing, Boss. Just... checking the perimeter security. We need to lock down the estate immediately. Someone slipped poison into your private vintage.”

“My private vintage,” Alejandro repeated slowly. He stood up, towering over the guards, his presence commanding absolute obedience and terror. But instead of looking at Marcus, he turned toward the bookshelf where the tiny red light blinked steadily. “Marcus, look at me.”

The guard swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead. “Yes, Boss?”

“That camera in the shelf,” Alejandro said softly, stepping closer. “It doesn’t just monitor the room for intruders, does it? It records a 360-degree high-definition feed directly to my private, encrypted server. Every second. Every movement. Every poisoned drop.”

Marcus took a step back, his hand twitching toward the holster at his hip.

“Don't,” Alejandro warned, his voice dropping an octave.

At that exact moment, heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway as more guards and staff rushed toward the study. Among them was my mother, her face stained with tears, her apron slightly crooked as she pushed through the crowd.

“Emma!” Mama cried out, shoving past Marcus to pull me into her arms. “Oh, sweet heaven, Emma, what were you thinking? Are you hurt? Mr. Moretti, I am so sorry, please, she’s just a child—”

May you like

“Elena,” Alejandro interrupted, his gaze shifting to my mother, softening just a fraction before hardening back into steel as he looked at Marcus. “Your daughter just saved my life. And she has exposed a traitor inside my own house.”

Marcus didn't wait to hear the rest. With a desperate snarl, he drew his weapon, aiming it straight at Alejandro's chest.
