Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The heavy oak door had barely clicked shut behind Viktor Vance before Alejandro turned back to me, his expression hardened into stone. The warmth he had shown moments before evaporated, replaced by the chilling aura of a man navigating a world of constant betrayal.
“Emma,” Alejandro said, his voice a low command. “Go to your room and wait for your mother. Do not open the door for anyone except me or Elena.”
I clutched my stuffed rabbit tightly and nodded, running down the carpeted hallway to the adjoining suite where Mama had laid out my pajamas. But as I closed the heavy door, my childish curiosity—the same curiosity that had once led me up the servant stairs to save his life—got the better of me.
I cracked the door open just an inch, peering out into the dimly lit hallway.
Alejandro was standing just outside our suite, speaking in a harsh, hushed whisper into his encrypted satellite phone.
“I want every financial record associated with Viktor Vance pulled by midnight,” Alejandro snarled into the receiver. “Every offshore account, every communication with our European rivals, every transaction. If he thinks he can play a double game behind my back, he’s gravely mistaken.”
A pause followed as the person on the other end replied.
“No,” Alejandro continued, his voice dropping dangerously low. “Don't touch him yet. Let him think his plan is moving forward. A rat only exposes the whole nest when it thinks it’s safe outside.”
My heart fluttered nervously. Even at four years old, I knew words like rat, enemy, and double game meant something terrible was happening. The cozy luxury of the mansion suddenly felt fragile, like a house of cards built over a deep, dark abyss.
The next morning, the atmosphere in the estate was suffocatingly tense. Guards marched through the corridors in pairs, their assault rifles slung securely across their chests. Mama looked pale and exhausted as she helped me into my pink sweater, her hands trembling slightly as she buttoned it up.
“Emma, listen to me very carefully today,” Mama whispered, kneeling down and grasping my shoulders. “You are not to leave the east wing. Play with your toys, stay in your room, and do not go near the main courtyard or the front gates. Understand?”
“Is Mr. Moretti in trouble?” I asked, tilting my head.
Mama hesitated, biting her lower lip. “Mr. Moretti protects us, sweetie. But dangerous men want to hurt him. We must stay out of their way.”
True to her word, I spent the entire morning coloring pictures and building blocks in our spacious playroom. But around noon, a sharp, metallic sound shattered the quiet afternoon—the distinct, unmistakable roar of heavy vehicle engines idling outside the front gates, followed by angry shouting.
I crept to the large bay window overlooking the front courtyard.
Three black armored SUVs had forced their way past the outer security checkpoint, their tires grinding violently against the gravel. Dozens of men in black tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, their weapons drawn. At the center of them stood Viktor Vance, flanked by a squad of heavily armed mercenaries who clearly did not belong to the Moretti syndicate.

Viktor wasn't smiling anymore. His face was twisted into a mask of cold fury and desperate ambition.
“Alejandro Moretti!” Viktor roared, his voice echoing off the stone walls of the mansion. “Come out and face the board! Your reign is over!”
