Chapter 9 - Rebirth

"Clear!"

The electric shock threw Damon’s body off the operating table, his spine arching violently before collapsing back onto the sterile sheets.

"Still in V-fib! Charge to 300!"

In the surgical suite of the Federal Medical Center in San Diego, a team of elite military surgeons worked under the intense white lights. Behind the double-paned observation glass, Maya stood alongside Agent Miller, her fingers pressed so tightly against the glass that her knuckles were dead white.

Her scrubbing gloves were sitting in a biohazard bin outside. For four hours, she had fought alongside the military surgeons in the transport helicopter, maintaining manual CPR and keeping his airway clear until they reached the facility. She had refused to leave his side until they physically pushed her into the observation booth.

"Come on, Damon," she whispered against the glass, her heart pounding in her throat. "Fight."

"Defibrillating in three... two... one... Clear!"

The paddles fired again.

For three agonizing seconds, the cardiac monitor showed a flat, terrifying line.

Then, a small spike appeared.

Then another.

Beep... beep... beep...

"Sinus rhythm restored," the lead surgeon announced, wiping sweat from his brow. "We have a pulse. Get those vascular clamps in place now!"

Maya collapsed back against the glass wall, sliding down to the floor as tears of overwhelming relief poured down her face. Agent Miller knelt beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"He’s going to make it, Nurse Sinclair," Miller said softly. "He’s the toughest bastard I’ve ever seen."

Over the next six months, the world shifted completely.

The evidence Damon provided triggered the largest legal purge in Arizona’s history. Dozens of corrupt politicians, judges, and law enforcement officers—including Marcus Vance—were convicted and sentenced to long prison terms. The Cross Syndicate was completely dismantled, its assets seized or legally converted into charitable foundations.

Because of Damon’s sacrifice in saving Special Agent Miller’s life, combined with his total cooperation in dismantling the underworld network, the federal court offered him an unprecedented deal: total sentence commutation under a permanent witness protection program, provided he officially ceased all criminal activities and disappeared forever.

As for Maya, her record was completely expunged. The State Board of Nursing restored her license with full honors, citing her extraordinary bravery and medical dedication under extreme duress.

On a warm afternoon in early autumn, Maya walked out of the federal courthouse in San Diego, carrying a small leather bag containing her restored credentials and a set of plane tickets.

Waiting for her at the curb was a simple, silver sedan.

The driver’s door opened, and a man stepped out into the bright California sunlight. He wore a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, looking lean, healthy, and entirely at peace. The severe, dangerous edge that had once characterized Damon Cross had softened into a gentle, quiet strength.

He walked over to her, his gray eyes shining with an emotion he no longer had to hide.

"Miss Sinclair," Damon said softly, his voice clear and strong.

"Mr. Cross," she replied, a bright, tearful smile breaking across her face. "Or should I call you by your new name?"

May you like

"David," he smiled, reaching out to take her bag. "David Miller. Just an ordinary man starting over."

"An ordinary man," she repeated, stepping closer to him and resting her hand against his chest—feeling the powerful, steady, perfect rhythm of his heart. "I like the sound of that."
