Chapter 6 - Hunted in the Shadows

Reclaiming an empire, however, was not as simple as winning a single battle. Victor Vance’s death had broken the spine of the rebellion, but it had also drawn the intense scrutiny of the federal government. The FBI, realizing that the chaotic violence in Phoenix was the result of a massive underworld vacuum, launched a federal task force aimed at taking down the entire Cross organization.
Damon’s death at Sonoran Mercy was now officially recognized as a cover-up. Maya Sinclair was no longer listed as a missing person; she was named as an accomplice in the escape of a high-profile criminal. Her photograph was broadcast on national news networks.
For the next two months, Damon and Maya lived on the move, drifting through a network of safehouses spanning from the mountains of Northern Arizona to the isolated coastal towns of Baja California.
During those long weeks on the road, the dynamic between them deepened into something profound. Stripped of his army and his luxury, Damon was no longer just a feared mob boss; he was a man learning to feel again. And Maya, stripped of her career and her safe, predictable world, discovered a strength and resilience within herself she had never known existed.
In a quiet, sunlit villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean near Ensenada, they spent their days in peaceful isolation. Damon learned to relax his constant vigil, while Maya taught him about the simple things he had sacrificed long ago in his pursuit of power—books, quiet mornings, and simple conversations uninterrupted by violence.
One evening, while standing on the balcony watching the sunset fire up the horizon, Damon stepped up behind Maya, wrapping his arms gently around her waist. She leaned back against his broad chest, placing her hands over his.
"You're thinking again," she said softly, turning her head to look at him.
"I’m thinking about the promise I made you," Damon replied, his gray eyes reflecting the gold of the setting sun. "I promised I would give you back your life."
"Damon, I told you—"
"I have the paperwork ready," he interrupted gently. "A new identity. A complete clean slate. A top-tier surgical hospital in Switzerland has accepted an anonymous endowment for a nursing position. It’s yours, Maya. No police, no cartel, no shadows."
Maya turned completely in his arms, staring at him with wide, emotional eyes. "And what about you?"
Damon lowered his gaze. "I have to go back to Phoenix one last time to dismantle the network permanently and hand over the evidence against the remaining corrupt politicians. If I go to Switzerland with you, my past will eventually catch up to us. I won't put your life in danger again."
"You're asking me to leave you," Maya said, her voice cracking.
"I’m asking you to live," Damon corrected softly, taking her face in his hands. "You saved my life, Maya. You gave me a second chance. The only way I can honor that gift is by ensuring you get to have a future."
Maya looked into his eyes, seeing the immense pain and love hidden beneath his stern expression. "I didn't save your life just so we could spend the rest of our lives apart," she whispered. "If you go back to Phoenix, I’m going with you."
"Maya, no—"
May you like
"You need a medic, don't you?" she offered a small, brave smile, tears glittering in her eyes. "Besides... somebody has to make sure your heart keeps beating."
Damon stared at her, overwhelmed by her fierce devotion. For the first time since she had met him, a genuine, warm smile broke across his face. He leaned down and kissed her—a soft, deep, lingering kiss that sealed a silent vow between them.
