Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Phoenix

The first three days in the bunker were a blur of fever dreams, infection control, and constant vigil. Maya barely slept, taking fifteen-minute naps on a folding chair beside Damon’s medical bed. Rafael’s men kept watch outside the heavy iron doors, bringing her fresh water, surgical supplies, and quiet updates from the outside world.

The news was chaotic. The media reported that Damon Cross, the undisputed head of the Syndicate that controlled the Southwest supply lines, had been declared dead following an ambush at an intersection. His body had allegedly been stolen from Sonoran Mercy Hospital by unknown gunmen. The city was on the brink of an all-out gang war as rival factions—led by a ruthless lieutenant named Victor Vance—began carving up Damon’s territory.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Maya Sinclair had officially gone missing. The police considered her a potential kidnapping victim or an accomplice. Her quiet, predictable life had been completely erased overnight.

On the fourth morning, the fever finally broke.

Maya was adjusting the drip rate of Damon’s antibiotic IV when she felt a sharp, intense gaze on her. She turned to find Damon awake, his pale eyes clear and cold, tracking her every movement. Without the haze of trauma and blood, his presence was overwhelming. He was a tall, powerfully built man in his mid-thirties, with sharp cheekbones, a severe jawline, and dark hair silvering slightly at the temples. Even bedridden and hooked to a dozen tubes, he radiated an authority that made the air in the room feel heavy.

"You're the nurse," he said, his voice low and raspy, but smooth like velvet over iron.

"Maya," she corrected, stepping forward to check his pulse. "Maya Sinclair. And you need to stop trying to sit up. You have fourteen stitches in your lung lining and a healing chest wound."

Damon didn't try to move, but his eyes followed her fingers as she checked the dressing on his chest. "Rafael told me what happened. He said Voss pronounced me dead. He said you defied a chief surgeon, jammed a needle into my chest, and pulled me back."

"You had a tension pneumothorax," she said matter-of-factly, taking his blood pressure. "It was a simple anatomical deduction. You weren't dead; your body just couldn't breathe."

"Voss didn't see it."

"Voss was terrified of the men with guns in his ER. Fear makes doctors blind."

Damon leaned his head back against the pillow, studying her face. "And you weren't afraid?"

"I was terrified," Maya admitted, meeting his gaze directly. "I’m still terrified. I’m currently stuck in a basement with the most dangerous man in Arizona, wanted by the police, and miles away from my home. But I took an oath to preserve life, Mr. Cross. I don't care whose life it is."

Damon stared at her for a long moment, a subtle shift occurring in his gray eyes. "Most people who look at me see a tyrant, a criminal, or a paycheck. You saw a patient."

"I saw a man who wasn't done breathing."

Before Damon could answer, the iron door shifted open, and Rafael stepped in, his expression grim.

"Boss," Rafael said, bowing his head slightly. "You're awake."

"Report," Damon commanded, his voice immediately shifting into the tone of a warlord.

"Victor Vance has convinced the council that you're dead," Rafael said, his knuckles white against his sides. "He’s taking control of the docks and the downtown distribution centers. He’s hunting down anyone loyal to you. They think the Syndicate belongs to them now."

Damon’s eyes narrowed to dangerous slits. "Let them think I’m a ghost. A ghost can move in the dark without being seen." He looked over at Maya, whose face had gone pale as she listened to the harsh reality of the underworld war happening above them.

"Rafael," Damon said softly. "Set up a clean line. Get Miss Sinclair a fresh set of clothes, proper food, and a secure phone to check on her family—without revealing her location."

Maya looked up, surprised. "My family?"

"You saved my life, Maya," Damon said, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "I don't leave my debts unpaid. I will protect you from the police, from Vance, and from the mess I brought to your doorstep. You have my word."
