Chapter 8 - Sacrifices and Deals

The negotiation dragged on into the early morning hours. Marcus Vance tried desperately to find a loophole, but Damon’s trap was ironclad. The evidence contained on the hard drives was enough to put away fifty high-ranking officials and dismantle three major international cartels.

By 4:00 AM, Agent Miller made his decision. Recognizing that securing the largest criminal bust in federal history outweighed prosecuting a single nurse, he signed the immunity agreement for Maya Sinclair.

Down in the van, Rafael turned to Maya, his eyes heavy with respect. "He did it, Maya. You're clean. The law can never touch you again."

"At what cost?" Maya wept, staring at the telemetry monitor that tracked Damon’s heart rate through a hidden sensor under his collar. "He surrendered himself, Rafael! He’s going to spend his life in a concrete cell!"

"Damon knew what he was doing," Rafael said softly. "For a man like him, this is the only way out that doesn't end in a coffin."

Suddenly, the audio feed from the top floor erupted into static, followed by the terrifying sound of shouting and automatic gunfire!

"Ambush!" Rafael yelled, pulling his weapon and throwing the van door open.

In the SunTech Tower, Marcus Vance had realized that Damon’s survival meant his ultimate ruin. Desperate to cover his tracks, Vance had pulled a concealed weapon and opened fire on both Damon and Agent Miller, aiming to destroy the hard drives and eliminate the witnesses.

When Maya reached the top floor alongside Rafael, the room was a scene of devastation. Two FBI agents lay dead on the floor. Marcus Vance was subdued, bleeding from a shoulder wound, pinned beneath a heavy desk.

And near the central table, Damon lay on his back, his dark coat stained with fresh, crimson blood right over his chest scar.

"Damon!" Maya screamed, sprinting across the room and dropping to her knees beside him.

Agent Miller was kneeling beside him, trying desperately to apply pressure to a wound near Damon’s shoulder, but the dark blood was pooling rapidly underneath his body.

"He took a bullet for me," Miller said, his eyes wide with shock and guilt. "Vance pulled a gun... Cross threw himself in front of me."

"Get out of the way!" Maya shouted, pushing the federal agent aside with a force that surprised even herself. She ripped open Damon’s shirt, her hands immediately covered in his warm blood.

Damon’s gray eyes fluttered open, looking up at her through a haze of shock. His chest was heaving with shallow, agonizing breaths.

"Maya..." he rasped, a weak, bloody smile touching his lips. "You... you were supposed to stay in the van..."

"Shut up!" she sobbed, tears raining down onto his face as her fingers frantically probed his chest. "Don't you dare talk! Don't you dare die on me again!"

"I... I got you your freedom," he whispered, his grip on her hand growing faint. "You're safe now..."

"I don't care about freedom if you aren't in it!" she screamed. She looked up at Rafael and Agent Miller. "He has a hemothorax! His left lung is collapsing! Call an ambulance right now!"

"No ambulances!" Miller yelled into his radio. "We need a tactical medevac team on the roof immediately!"

Maya pressed her hands firmly against the bleeding wound, feeling the ragged rhythm of his heart stuttering beneath her palms. "Stay with me, Damon," she begged, leaning close to his ear. "You survived three bullets in Trauma Three. You survived an entire cartel. You are not dying in this room!"

Damon’s pale hand reached up, his fingers weakly touching her tear-stained cheek. "I gave you... my heart, Maya... keep it... beating..."

His hand dropped, and his eyes rolled back as the monitor on his chest flatlined into a continuous, piercing tone.
