Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

Returning to Phoenix was a suicide mission in the eyes of everyone except Damon Cross.
The city was crawling with federal agents, state troopers, and the lingering remnants of rival syndicates seeking revenge. But Damon wasn't returning to fight a war; he was returning to set a trap that would tear down the corrupt establishment once and for all.
Working from a hidden apartment in downtown Phoenix, Damon and Rafael orchestrated a master stroke. Using a vast network of encrypted files detailing decades of political bribery, illegal shipping lanes, and federal corruption, Damon prepared to deliver an ultimatum to the District Attorney and the lead FBI investigator on his case.
Maya acted as his central coordinator, managing communication lines and monitoring medical supplies. She had transformed from a timid ER nurse into a tactical partner, calm under pressure and completely unfazed by the high stakes.
On a rainy Tuesday midnight, Damon arranged a secret meeting at the top floor of the abandoned SunTech Tower in central Phoenix. The attendees were Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance—Victor Vance’s corrupt brother—and FBI Special Agent Harold Miller.
Damon walked into the high-rise office alone, carrying a small metal briefcase. Down in the parking garage, Maya sat in a surveillance van with Rafael, monitoring the audio feeds through an encrypted headpiece.
"You're a dead man walking, Cross," Marcus Vance sneered as Damon stepped into the room. Three armed FBI agents leveled their weapons at Damon’s chest.
"I’ve been dead before, Marcus," Damon said smoothly, placing the briefcase on the central table. "It’s not as impressive as people make it out to be."
"You dragged the whole city into a bloodbath," Agent Miller said, his hand hovering near his holster. "There is no deal for you. You're going to a federal maximum-security facility for the rest of your natural life."
"I’m not here to make a deal for myself," Damon replied, opening the briefcase to reveal a series of hard drives and printed ledgers. "I’m here to make a deal for the city."
Vance’s eyes widened as he recognized the documents. "Where did you get those?"
"Every bribe you accepted from my former rivals, every judge you put in your pocket, every shipment you allowed through the border," Damon explained calmly. "These drives are linked to an automated server. If I don't input a safety code every six hours, this entire database will be simultaneously broadcast to every major news outlet, federal judge, and internal affairs bureau in the country."
Vance’s face went dead white. "You're bluffing."
"Try me," Damon said softly, his voice cold as ice. "Here are my terms. Full immunity and complete expungement of all charges for Maya Sinclair. A clean record, a restored nursing license, and total protection under the Witness Protection Program if she chooses it. In exchange, I surrender myself into federal custody, and I give you the keys to dismantle the remaining criminal networks in the Southwest."
In the surveillance van, Maya gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Tears spilled over her eyelashes as she heard his words through the earpiece. He wasn't bargaining for his freedom; he was trading his life for hers.
"Damon, no..." she whispered into her microphone, though her channel was muted to keep his location secure.

"What about you, Cross?" Agent Miller asked, staring at the evidence with a mix of awe and shock. "What do you get out of this?"
Damon stood tall, looking out the rain-streaked window at the shimmering lights of Phoenix. "I get to ensure that the one good thing to come out of my existence isn't destroyed by your war."
