Chapter 8 - The Corner Office

Time marched forward, bringing maturity, wisdom, and new horizons.

On a crisp autumn morning in 2038, twenty-one-year-old Lily Parker walked through the revolving doors of Cole Capital’s forty-two-story headquarters.

She wasn't wearing an oversized coat or soaked sneakers. She wore a sharp, custom charcoal suit, carried a sleek leather briefcase, and walked with the exact same squared shoulders and lifted chin that had caught Adrian’s attention fourteen years ago.

The receptionist—the same kind woman who had been there years before—smiled warmly. "Good morning, Ms. Parker."

"Good morning, Sarah," Lily replied with a bright smile.

She took the private executive elevator straight to the top floor.

When she entered the grand corner office, she found Adrian sitting in his leather armchair. He had officially stepped down as CEO the previous week, handing over the reins of the multi-billion-dollar empire to the person he trusted most in the world.

Adrian looked up, smiling as Lily took her seat behind the massive mahogany desk—the very desk where her journey had begun.

"How does the view look from the top chair?" Adrian asked gently.

Lily looked out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, watching the Chicago skyline glisten beneath the morning sun. She thought back to the cold January wind, the empty bottle, the purple crayon list, and the terrifying silence of a starving baby.

"It looks like hard work," Lily said, her eyes shining with quiet determination. "And it looks like home."

Adrian stood up, walking over to place a small, framed piece of paper on her desk.

It was the original purple crayon list: FEED EMMA. WASH BOTTLES. FIND FOOD. CLEAN FLOOR. KEEP EMMA QUIET. DO NOT MAKE VANESSA MAD.

"Never forget where you started," Adrian said softly.

"I never will," Lily replied, resting her hand over the frame. "Because that little girl didn't just survive—she built a legacy."
