Chapter 3 - Shadows of the South Side

By February, the penthouse suite of Cole Capital felt less like an office building and more like a home. Lily had gained a little weight, her hair was brushed and shiny, and her oversized coats were replaced with fine cashmere sweaters that Adrian insisted she buy.
However, emotional scars do not heal as quickly as physical ones.
One evening, Adrian found Lily sitting on the floor of his expansive private library, surrounded by children's books she couldn't yet read fluently, but was desperately trying to sound out.
"How are the reading lessons going?" Adrian asked, pouring himself a cup of black coffee.
"I know cat, dog, and money," Lily said, not looking up from a heavy dictionary. "Mr. Cole? Do you think Vanessa is coming back?"
Adrian paused, setting his cup down. "No, Lily. Vanessa was arrested last week for child abandonment and fraud. She won't be bothering you or Emma ever again."
Lily stopped turning pages. Her small fingers traced the edge of the book. "When I was three, my father left. When I was six, my mother got sick and stopped waking up. Now Vanessa is gone. Everyone leaves."
Adrian walked over and sat on the floor beside her—a CEO in a custom-tailored suit sitting cross-legged on a hardwood floor.
"People leave when they aren't strong enough to stay," Adrian said quietly. "Listen to me, Lily. I built an empire from nothing because I made a vow that no one would ever have power over my life again. You possess that exact same strength. But you don't have to carry the whole world by yourself anymore. You are seven years old. Your only job right now is to be a kid."
Lily looked up, her expression a mix of hope and deep skepticism. "Can a kid be a CEO?"
Adrian laughed—a rare, genuine sound that echoed through the quiet library. "If you work hard enough, you can run this entire building before you're thirty."

Just then, a soft babbling sound came from the bassinet near the desk. Emma was awake, kicking her legs and reaching for the ceiling. Lily immediately scrambled up, instinctively rushing over to check her diaper and hand her a rattle.
Adrian watched them, realizing that while Lily was learning to be a child, she was also the anchor keeping his own broken heart beating. For decades, Adrian Cole had been a machine driven by vengeance against his past poverty. Now, for the first time, he was driven by love.
