Chapter 2 - The Contract of the Broken Heart

Adrian stared at the seven-year-old girl standing straight and unyielding in his office. Her wet sneakers left small, dark pools on the expensive imported wool rug, but nobody dared mention it.

"Mr. Cole," Claire whispered, stepping closer to his desk. "We cannot let her walk out of here. If she goes back to that apartment with Vanessa, Child Protective Services might not find them in time. The pediatrician was clear—the baby is severely malnourished."

Adrian slowly stood up. His gaze remained fixed on Lily, who was currently checking to ensure Emma was still asleep on the couch.

"Lily," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a gentler, steady baritone that had commanded boardrooms for decades. "Look at me."

Lily turned her head, her brown eyes defensive, refusing to show any fear.

"I am not going to call the police. And I am not going to let anyone separate you from your sister," Adrian promised, holding out his palms to show he meant no harm. "And you do not need to clean my floors to earn the right to stay safe."

Lily frowned, tilting her head. "Everything has a cost. My mother said nothing in this world is free. If I don't work, we owe you. I don't like owing people."

Adrian felt a sharp pang in his chest. At seven years old, she already understood debt better than most college graduates.

"All right," Adrian said, making a quick decision. "You are hired. But your job title isn't cleaning crew."

Lily blinked. "Then what is it?"

"You are the official Executive Assistant of Baby Care and Morale for Cole Capital," Adrian said solemnly. "Your salary will be enough to buy formula, groceries, warm clothes, and secure a safe place to live. But your employment comes with strict conditions."

Lily’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. "What conditions?"

"Condition one: You must eat every meal provided to you. Condition two: You and Emma will stay in a secure, warm suite on the top floor of this building while we sort out a permanent home. Condition three: You are banned from doing any heavy cleaning." Adrian walked over, handing her a fresh, warm mug of hot cocoa topped with whipped cream from the breakfast service. "Do we have an agreement?"

Lily looked at the mug, then at the sleeping infant, and finally into Adrian's steady eyes. Slowly, her small hands reached out and took the cup.

"Okay," she whispered.

Within two hours, Adrian had deployed his personal legal team to investigate Vanessa and the apartment on the South Side. What they discovered horrified the entire executive board. Vanessa had been abandoning the two children for days at a time to gamble, leaving Lily to scavenge whatever she could find.

Adrian immediately used his immense influence to secure emergency custody of Emma and temporary legal guardianship of Lily for himself, bypassing the cold bureaucracy of the state system. For the first time in her life, Lily had a full pantry, a warm bed, and a pair of dry shoes.

Yet, she refused to sleep in her own king-sized bed. Instead, she curled up on the edge of the mattress next to Emma, clutching the purple crayon list in her fist, as if afraid she would wake up and find it all a dream.
