Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Past

When Lily turned fourteen, a ghost from her earliest memories suddenly reappeared in Chicago.
It started with a series of anonymous letters delivered to Cole Capital’s corporate office. The envelopes contained old photographs of Lily and Emma when they were babies, along with typed ransom notes demanding fifty thousand dollars or custody claims would be filed through corrupt local channels.
The sender was Arthur Parker—Lily and Emma’s biological uncle, a man who had abandoned them years before and now smelled easy money upon learning the girls were adopted by a billionaire.
Adrian wanted to crush the threat legally and quietly, deploying private investigators to track Arthur down. But Lily insisted on handling it face-to-face.
"He thinks I'm still that seven-year-old girl hiding behind a wet coat," Lily told Adrian in the secure conference room. "I want him to see who I am now."
A trap was set. A meeting was arranged at a quiet upscale café overlooking Millennium Park.
Arthur Parker—looking weathered, desperate, and sleazy in a cheap leather jacket—sat at an outdoor table, smoking a cigarette. He expected to find a terrified teenager whom he could easily manipulate.
Instead, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the curb.
The door opened, and out stepped Adrian Cole, radiating absolute authority. But it was the person walking beside him that made Arthur drop his cigarette.
Lily Parker, now fourteen, stood tall, wearing a tailored navy blazer, silver hoop earrings, and an expression of absolute, unshakeable confidence. Behind them stood two towering corporate security consultants in dark suits.
Arthur stood up nervously, forcing an oily smile. "Lily? Wow, look at you! You've grown up so much. And I see you found yourself a rich sugar daddy..."
Before Arthur could finish his sentence, Lily stepped forward and slammed a thick manila folder onto the table right in front of him.
"Sit down, Arthur," Lily said, her voice steady, cold, and echoing with absolute command.
Arthur blinked, intimidated by the sheer aura radiating from a teenager. He slowly sat down.
"Inside that folder," Lily continued, leaning slightly over the table, "are complete financial records of every illegal debt you've accumulated over the past decade, your current eviction notices, and federal tax evasion charges. Furthermore, our legal team has already secured permanent, irrevocable restraining orders preventing you from coming within five hundred miles of me or Emma."
Arthur’s face turned pale. "Now wait a minute, kid—"
"I am not your kid," Lily interrupted sharply. "And if you ever send another letter, make another threat, or even say our names again, Mr. Cole won't just ruin your life—he'll erase you from the state of Illinois. Do we understand each other?"
Arthur stared at her, realizing with absolute terror that the little girl he had neglected was now operating on a level far beyond his reach. He snatched his coat, stood up hastily, and fled down the street without uttering another word.
As Lily walked back toward the Mercedes, Adrian opened the door for her with a proud smile.

"Remind me never to negotiate against you in a boardroom," Adrian teased lightly.
Lily smiled, sliding into the leather seat beside him. "You taught me everything I know, CEO."
