Chapter 6 - The Arrival of Justice

Sirens began to wail outside, growing louder by the second until their red and blue lights flashed wildly through the tall arched windows of the Grand Ballroom.
The heavy oak doors burst open a second time, but this time it wasn't hotel staff. Half a dozen federal agents and state police officers marched in, led by a tall woman with silver-streaked hair and a sharp badge on her belt—Captain Miller of the State Bureau of Investigation.
“Jonathan Sterling? And Mr. Harrington?” Captain Miller asked, scanning the room before locking her eyes on the two sweating men near the stage.
“Right here, Captain,” Ethan said, holding up the secure flash drive containing the complete digital mirror of the server records. “And here is the complete ledger of corporate embezzlement, alongside audio logs confirming conspiracy to commit murder.”
Sterling tried to maintain a facade of arrogant defiance as two federal agents stepped forward and slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists. “This is a hostile corporate takeover! My lawyers will dismantle you, Vance! You have no proof!”
“Actually,” a gentle, trembling voice called out from the side aisle, “I do.”
Everyone turned to see Lupita stepping forward, holding an old leather-bound notepad.
“When Mrs. Vance worked here as an auditor, she gave me duplicate copies of every transaction receipt and hid them inside the sub-basement archive vault under my locker key,” Lupita said, looking directly at Sterling with eyes full of hard-earned courage. “She knew they were watching her, so she trusted me to keep the physical records safe if anything ever happened to her.”
Captain Miller took the notepad from Lupita’s hands, flipped through the meticulously organized pages bearing official corporate stamps and signatures, and nodded approvingly.
“Thank you, ma'am. This completes the chain of custody for our warrant,” Captain Miller said, turning to her officers. “Take them all into custody. Confiscate every terminal in the administrative offices.”
As Sterling and Harrington were hauled away in handcuffs past rows of shocked socialites and journalists, the heavy cloud of fear that had hung over the Grand Regent Hotel for three agonizing years finally began to lift.
Ethan let out a long, slow breath. The tension in his shoulders, carried through countless sleepless nights, began to melt away. He looked across the room and caught Lupita’s eye, giving her a deep, respectful nod of gratitude.

But the most important thing wasn't the arrest, nor the recovery of the hotel. It was what awaited him upstairs in Suite 904.
“Excuse me, Captain,” Ethan said softly. “I need to check on my daughter.”
