Chapter 5 - The Grand Gala

Upstairs, the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel glittered under thousands of crystals. Classical music swelled softly as hundred-dollar-a-plate donors sipped champagne, laughed, and networked beneath the towering ceilings.

At the center dais stood Jonathan Sterling, a silver-haired, charismatic man in his late sixties, holding a crystal flute as he prepared to give his keynote speech for the charity foundation.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Sterling began into the microphone, his voice echoing smoothly across the room, “tonight, the Grand Regent stands as a beacon of philanthropy, community, and unwavering integrity...”

Suddenly, the grand double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a resounding crash.

Heads turned. Conversations died instantly.

Ethan Vance walked down the central aisle, flanked by Marcus in full tactical gear and Harrington, who was stumbling forward with his hands zip-tied behind his back. Behind them walked Lupita, head held high, representing the dignity of every worker who had been silenced for years.

“Security!” one of the board members shouted from the front table. “Remove these trespassers immediately!”

“Stay where you are,” Ethan’s voice cut through the microphone system before any security guard could react.

With a quick nod from Ethan, Marcus walked over to the main audio-visual control console by the stage. He inserted the secure flash drive into the system, and within seconds, the massive projector screen behind Chairman Sterling flickered to life.

Instead of the charity logo, the screen displayed a digital folder titled: Grand Regent Financial Embezzlement & Internal Investigation - Sarah Vance, 2023.

Below it, scrolling in clear, undeniable text, were bank transfer records, shell company registrations, and audio transcripts of executive meetings discussing the silencing of whistleblowers.

The ballroom erupted into instant chaos. Flashbulbs from social media influencers’ phones began firing frantically. Wealthy donors gasped and stood up from their tables, whispering in horror.

Chairman Sterling’s face turned the color of ash. He dropped his crystal glass, the champagne spilling across the pristine white tablecloth like blood.

“Vance... what is the meaning of this madness?” Sterling stammered, stepping back from the podium. “You’re ruining a charity event! Call the police!”

“I already did, Sterling,” Ethan said, stepping onto the stage and standing right beside the corrupt chairman. “Not the local corrupt precinct you bought off three years ago. The federal financial crimes division and state homicide detectives are currently walking through the front lobby.”

Sterling lunged forward in a desperate, pathetic attempt to rip the microphone cord out of the wall, but Marcus easily intercepted him, shoving him back into a velvet chair.

“You killed my wife,” Ethan said, his voice echoing across the silent, stunned room. “You cut her car brakes because she exposed your greed. But you forgot one simple rule of mathematics, Sterling: the truth can never be truly deleted. It only compounds until the balance is paid in full.”
