Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Four years passed.

The triplets—now vibrant, joyful, and healthy four-year-olds—filled the house with laughter, muddy footprints, and endless curiosity. Clara was the thoughtful observer, Beatrix was the bold adventurer, and Maeve was the sweet artist who painted on every surface she could find.

Landon Pierce was a ghost of his former self. Unable to secure a high-level corporate job in Washington due to his tarnished reputation, he worked as a mid-level consultant in a small firm two states away. He had long since stopped paying attention to his visitation schedule, sending occasional, impersonal birthday cards that the girls barely acknowledged.

One summer afternoon, a package arrived at Corinne’s home. It was a formal legal document from Landon's attorney, offering to voluntarily terminate his parental rights in exchange for the forgiveness of back-child support payments he owed.

Corinne sat at her kitchen table, looking at the papers. For a moment, old anger flared, but it was quickly replaced by a profound sense of peace. Landon was giving up his final claim on their lives, offering her complete freedom.

She signed the papers without hesitation.

That evening, Julian—who had been Corinne's steady, loving partner for the past three years—came over for dinner. The girls ran to the door to greet him, tackling him with hugs as he laughed and lifted them up.

Watching them together, Corinne realized that her daughters had never lacked a father. They had Julian.

After the girls were put to bed, Julian took Corinne out to the backyard garden, lit by warm string lights. He knelt on one knee, holding a simple, beautiful platinum ring.

"Corinne, from the moment I saw you fiercely protecting your girls in the NICU, I knew you were the most extraordinary woman I would ever meet," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "You built a life out of love and resilience. I would be honored to stand beside you, protect you, and love you and our girls for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears welled in Corinne's eyes, but this time they were pure joy. "Yes, Julian. Absolutely yes."
