Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

While Our Triplets Were Fighting for Their Lives in the Delivery Room, I Overheard My Husband Laughing With Another Woman... Then He Said Something That Destroyed Our Marriage.

Three tiny heartbeats were growing weaker on the monitor beside me. My husband's chair stood empty. And somewhere across town, he was laughing.

At 3:08 on a rainy Monday afternoon, twenty-nine-year-old Corinne Whitlock lay beneath the harsh lights of a maternity suite at Harborview Women's Hospital in Tacoma, Washington.

She was only twenty-eight weeks pregnant—with triplet girls.

For months, Corinne had done everything her doctors instructed. She stopped working earlier than planned. She rested whenever she could. She never missed a single appointment. She had even transformed the guest room into a peaceful nursery with three tiny white cribs, each one waiting for a daughter she already loved with all her heart.

Yet nothing—nothing—could have prepared her for what was about to happen that afternoon.

The monitors beside her bed suddenly began beeping more rapidly. Nurses moved swiftly but calmly, exchanging short instructions while Dr. Mara Ellison studied the screen above Corinne's bed, her expression growing more serious.

Then the doctor stepped closer and gently took Corinne's hand.

"Corinne, I need you to listen to me very carefully. One baby's heart rate is dropping, and another is under serious pressure. We have to deliver these babies right now."

Corinne fought to control her breathing.

"Will they survive?"

Dr. Ellison refused to give her false hope.

"We are going to do everything humanly possible. But we cannot wait another minute."

Corinne slowly turned toward the empty chair beside her bed.

Her husband, Landon Pierce, had been sitting there less than an hour earlier. He had complained about how uncomfortable the room felt. He had checked his phone over and over again. Then he muttered something about an urgent issue at his investment firm.

He promised he'd be back in ten minutes.

He never returned.

Nurse Tessa Monroe picked up Corinne's phone and tried calling Landon once more.

The first two calls rang without an answer.

Nothing.

On the third try, the call unexpectedly connected.

Relief instantly filled Corinne's eyes.

"Landon?"

No one answered.

Instead, faint background sounds drifted through the phone—a lively room filled with laughter, quiet music, and the soft clinking of glasses being placed on a table. Landon had answered accidentally while the phone remained tucked inside his jacket pocket.

Then Corinne heard a woman laugh.

She recognized the voice immediately.

It belonged to Brielle Vaughn, the communications director at Landon's company. Corinne had met her at corporate dinners and charity galas. Brielle was always polished, always charming, and always just a little too comfortable standing close to Landon.

"You actually left the hospital?" Brielle asked.

Landon let out a quiet, amused chuckle.

"Corinne turns everything into a crisis. She probably felt one little cramp and decided the whole world had to stop spinning."

Corinne stared silently at the phone.

Dr. Ellison and Nurse Tessa heard every word as well.

Brielle lowered her voice, although the phone still picked it up clearly.

"But what if the babies are really coming?"

"Then the doctors will handle it," Landon replied. "I'm so tired of being controlled by her emotions. I'll show up later, stand beside her hospital bed, and everyone will call me the devoted husband."

Brielle laughed once again.

"And after that?"

"After that," he said, "we start our real life."

Corinne's fingers tightened around the phone.

And at that exact moment, she made a decision that would change everything...
