Chapter 9 - Rebuilding a Promise

Spring arrived in New England, bringing green leaves and warm ocean breezes.
Lena ran across the wide back lawn of the Marblehead house, kicking a soccer ball, her laughter echoing against the sound of the waves crashing on the shore below. She no longer gasped for air; her breath was strong, her heart completely whole.
Adrien watched her from the terrace, holding a mug of warm coffee. Meera stepped out beside him, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her head against his chest. Adrien slipped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close and kissing the top of her head.
Evelyn Hail’s trial had concluded a month prior. She received a suspended sentence and heavy financial restitution due to her age, but her social standing and political influence were utterly destroyed. She had moved away from Boston, living in self-imposed exile. Lucas Mercer was serving an eight-year sentence in federal prison.
The dark clouds that had shadowed their lives had finally cleared, leaving behind only the light of the truth.
“Look at her,” Meera whispered, watching Lena chase a butterfly near the garden wall. “Five years ago, I thought I would have to fight for her life all by myself forever.”
“You were braver than I ever was,” Adrien said softly, resting his chin on her hair. “You protected her, Meera. You gave her everything, even when I gave you nothing.”
“You gave me this,” Meera said, turning in his arms to look up into his gray eyes—the same eyes that now sparkled with joy in their daughter’s face. “You came back for us.”
Adrien pulled a small velvet box from his pocket. He didn't drop to one knee, nor was there a room full of wealthy spectators watching under crystal chandeliers. There was only the sound of the ocean, the laughter of their daughter, and the truth between them.
He opened the box, revealing a simple, elegant platinum band engraved with the date Lena was born.
“Meera,” Adrien said, his voice thick with devotion. “I don’t ask for a second chance to undo the past. I ask for the privilege of spending the rest of my life building our future. Will you marry me again?”
May you like
Meera’s eyes flooded with happy tears. She didn't hesitate.
“Yes,” she whispered, slipping her hand into his. “Yes, Adrien.”
