Chapter 7 - The Bridge Between Us

The morning of Lena’s surgery was overcast and quiet. The pediatric prep room was filled with colorful stickers and stuffed animals, but the air was heavy with anxiety.

Lena sat on the hospital bed, holding a small plush bear Adrien had bought her. “Daddy?” she whispered. “Will it hurt?”

Adrien sat on the edge of the bed, holding her left hand, while Meera held her right. He leaned down and kissed her forehead right over the crescent-shaped mark.

“Not at all, my sweet girl,” Adrien whispered, his eyes shining with tears. “You’re going to fall asleep, dream about yellow suns and pink bunnies, and when you wake up, your heart is going to be strong enough to run as fast as the wind.”

“Will you be here when I wake up?” she asked, looking between Adrien and Meera.

“We will both be right here,” Meera promised, leaning down to press her cheek against Lena’s. “We are never leaving your side.”

When the surgical team wheeled Lena away into the operating room, the doors swung shut, leaving Adrien and Meera standing alone in the quiet corridor.

Meera sank into a chair in the waiting room, burying her face in her hands. The exhaustion of five years of struggling alone, working two jobs, hiding her pain, and fighting for her daughter’s life finally broke through her defenses.

Adrien knelt before her, gently taking her hands in his.

“Meera,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “I know I can never undo the damage I caused. I know I broke your heart in the cruelest way possible. But I swear to you, for as long as I live, I will spend every day earning back a fraction of your trust.”

Meera looked up at him, seeing the genuine remorse and deep love in his eyes—the man she had loved five years ago, finally freed from the poison of his mother’s influence.

“I was so angry at you, Adrien,” she whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I hated you for not believing me. But seeing you with Lena... seeing how she looks at you... I realize the man I loved wasn't evil. He was just blind.”

She reached out, her fingers softly touching his cheek. “I don’t want to be angry anymore, Adrien. I just want us to be a family.”
