Chapter 8 - The Proposal

A year later, on a crisp autumn evening, Grant took Claire back to San Francisco.

Noah was staying safely at home in Atlanta with a trusted nurse and Evelyn, who had spent the past year slowly, humbly rebuilding her relationship with her son and grandson, becoming a loving, present grandmother.

Grant had reserved the entire rooftop terrace of the Union Square hotel where they had first met three years earlier.

The night air was cool, and the fountain where Claire had once dipped her feet was illuminated with soft, golden fairy lights. The terrace was adorned with hundreds of white roses, and a soft violin melody played quietly in the background.

Claire walked out onto the terrace, wearing a stunning emerald green silk dress that matched her eyes. She looked around in awe, a soft laugh escaping her lips.

"Grant, what is all this?" she asked, turning to face him.

Grant was standing near the edge of the fountain, dressed in a sharp, tailored tuxedo, looking as nervous as a young man on his very first date.

"This is where it all started," Grant said, stepping toward her and taking both of her hands in his. "This is where a fierce, brilliant woman told me that my broken microphone was fourth on her list of priorities."

Claire laughed, her heart bursting with affection. "It was fifth, actually."

"Fifth," Grant corrected with a tender smile. "Claire, three years ago, I was a man who thought he had everything. I had money, power, and prestige. But I was completely hollow. I lived in a fortress built out of fear, believing that if I never let anyone in, I could never be destroyed."

He brought her hands to his lips, kissing her knuckles softly.

"Then you walked into my life. You showed me what it meant to be genuine, brave, and selfless. Even when I failed you in the worst way possible, you raised our son with boundless love and dignity. You didn't just give me a son, Claire. You saved my soul. You taught me how to love without fear."

Grant slowly sank down onto one knee on the stone floor of the terrace. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box. He opened it to reveal a magnificent, flawless ring featuring a rare, radiant emerald framed by delicate diamonds.

"Claire Bennett," Grant said, his voice deep, steady, and overflowing with profound emotion. "You are my heart, my home, and my true north. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me spend the rest of my life making sure you and Noah are cherished every single day?"

Claire covered her hands over her mouth, tears of overwhelming joy spilling down her glowing cheeks. The painful memories of the past, the tears shed in solitude, the fear and the uncertainty—all of it melted away in the warmth of this moment.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, Grant! A thousand times, yes!"

Grant slipped the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a deep, passionate embrace, lifting her slightly off her feet as the city lights twinkled beneath them like a sea of ground stars.
