Chapter 3 - The Unwelcome Intruders

By the next morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, sunny Atlanta sky. However, the calm inside Claire’s life was short-lived.

Grant had spent the night in his SUV parked outside Claire’s house—refusing to leave the perimeter, yet respecting her boundary by not forcing his way back inside after Noah was put to bed. At 7:00 AM, a sleek black town car arrived, dropping off a fresh suit and a brief case for Grant, alongside bags of organic groceries, baby supplies, and fresh breakfast from an high-end local bakery.

Claire opened the front door to find Grant standing on the porch, freshly showered from a nearby hotel gym, holding two cups of coffee and a box of pastries.

"I'm not asking to come in as your partner," Grant said before she could speak. "I'm asking to sit with my son for breakfast."

Claire stared at him, her defenses battling her exhaustion. "Noah eats oat cereal, not French pastries."

"I brought both," Grant said, offering a cautious, hopeful smile.

Reluctantly, Claire stepped aside.

The morning progressed in a surreal, quiet rhythm. Watching Grant—a man accustomed to commanding boardrooms of global leaders—attempt to sit on a tiny wooden chair and feed mashed bananas to a squirming toddler was a sight Claire never thought she would witness. He was patient, absurdly gentle, and utterly terrified of dropping the spoon or making a wrong move. Noah, on the other hand, was delighted by his tall guest, occasionally slapping his tiny, sticky hands against Grant’s pristine silk tie. Grant didn't even flinch; he simply smiled, a genuine, unreserved expression that Claire had rarely seen even during their best moments in San Francisco.

However, the fragile peace was shattered at noon.

The quiet neighborhood street resonated with the loud engine of a luxury sedan pulling up behind Grant’s SUV. Moments later, heavy footfalls sounded on the porch, followed by an aggressive knock on the door.

When Claire opened it, her heart sank.

Standing on the porch was Evelyn Whitmore, dressed impeccably in a Chanel tweed suit, her eyes cold and sweeping over the modest house with open disdain. Standing beside her was dynamic corporate attorney Richard Vance—Julian Vance's elder brother and the head of Whitmore Systems' legal defense firm.

"Evelyn," Claire said, her voice dropping.

"Claire," Evelyn replied, her tone dripping with polished ice. She stepped past Claire without waiting for an invitation, stepping into the hallway as if she owned the property. "I see you've managed to lure my son back into your little web."

Grant stepped out of the kitchen, carrying Noah in his arms. His face hardened instantly upon seeing his mother. "Mother? What are you doing here?"

"I am saving you from your own foolishness, Grant," Evelyn said sharply, eyeing the baby in his arms with a mixture of skepticism and cold calculation. "Richard called me the moment he realized you had abandoned your meetings in New York to fly to Georgia. You are behaving irrationally."

Richard Vance stepped forward, holding a leather-bound folder. "Grant, as your legal representative and advisor, I must urge caution. There is no definitive proof that this child is a legitimate Whitmore heir. Given this woman's past association with the security leak—"

"The leak that your brother caused, Richard?" Grant’s voice dropped an octave, deep and dangerous.

Richard paused, momentarily rattled, but quickly recovered. "Julian’s actions were his own, and he will face trial. But that does not absolve Miss Bennett of the timing of this pregnancy. We need immediate, formal court-ordered DNA testing, custody restrictions, and a non-disclosure agreement to protect Whitmore Systems' market valuation."

Evelyn walked up to Grant, staring down at Noah. "Look at this environment, Grant. A tiny house in a mediocre suburb. If this child is indeed a Whitmore, he belongs in Connecticut or New York, raised with proper tutors, security, and elite schooling—not in a place like this, raised by a hotel coordinator."

Claire’s hands curled into tight fists. "Get out of my house."

"Excuse me?" Evelyn looked at Claire with cold disdain. "You have hidden my grandson for nearly a year to use him as leverage—"

"I said, get out!" Claire’s voice echoed through the house. "You drove me away with your private investigators and your lies, Evelyn! You never cared about Grant’s happiness, only his control! And you will not touch my son!"

"She is right," Grant said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Evelyn turned to her son, surprised. "Grant?"

Grant took two steps forward, placing himself firmly between his mother, the attorney, and Claire. "You are going to leave this house right now, Mother. And Richard, you are fired. Whitmore Systems will sever all contracts with your firm by the end of the business day."

Richard’s eyes widened in shock. "Grant, you can't be serious! Over a personal matter?"

"This isn't a personal matter. It's a family matter. And you are trespassing," Grant said, his gaze fixed on his mother. "If either of you ever come near Claire or Noah again, I will use every dollar of my fortune to ensure you are legally barred from ever setting foot near them. Am I making myself clear?"

Evelyn stared at her son, realizing for the first time in his life that she had completely lost her grip on him. The icy control she had used to shape him since his father left had finally shattered. Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked out, Richard scrambling behind her.

The door slammed shut.

Grant turned around, still holding Noah, who was looking up at his father with wide, curious eyes. Grant looked at Claire, his face pale, breathing heavily.

"They won't hurt you again," Grant promised, his voice trembling. "I will protect both of you. Even if it costs me everything I built."
