Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Hallway

Preparations for Julian’s surgery began immediately. Maya spent hours mapping out the surgical approach. During one of her late-night rounds, she noticed an elderly hospital maintenance worker staring at her from the corridor.
It was Peter.
Twenty years had passed since Peter was an orderly at the private clinic. Overcome with guilt over what he had been forced to facilitate that rainy night, he had left the clinic years ago and eventually taken a quiet janitorial job at Metropolitan. He had followed Dr. Harris’s rising career in the hospital newsletters, silently recognizing her age, her arrival date in records, and the unmistakable, intelligent brown eyes of the baby he had left on the church steps.
Peter approached Maya nervously near her office. "Dr. Harris... do you have a moment?"
Maya stopped, sensing the man’s deep anxiety. "Of course. Is everything all right?"
Peter’s hands trembled as he held an old, yellowed piece of paper. "I... I need to clear my conscience before it's too late. Twenty years ago, I did something terrible because I was afraid of a powerful man."

He handed her a handwritten log from the closed private clinic—a hidden record he had kept out of guilt. It detailed the birth of a female infant born to Rebecca and Jason Whitmore, signed off by the attending nurse, with a notation ordering her removal due to 'paternal disownment,' followed by Peter’s own written confession of leaving the child at the local church on the exact date Maya had been found by Martha.
Maya stared at the paper. The dates, the location, the names—everything aligned with the few details Martha had gathered over the years. The cold truth settled over her: the cold, demanding man sitting in the VIP suite was her biological father, and the dying boy in the bed was her biological brother.
