Chapter 8 - A Real Family

A year after the arrest, the final adoption hearing took place at the Portland Family Courthouse.
The courtroom was warm and filled with light, vastly different from the criminal trial months before. Sarah Lin stood beside us, along with Dr. Vance and several friends from the hospital who had supported us through the dark times.
Judge Helen Thorne, a compassionate woman with silver hair, looked over the extensive reports from Lumi’s child psychologists, social workers, and schoolteachers.
"Mr. David Vance," Judge Thorne said, looking down at me over her spectacles. "The records show that under your care, Lumi has excelled in school, overcome severe psychological trauma, and built a safe, happy life. How does she seem to you?"
"She is the bravest, brightest girl I’ve ever known, Your Honor," I said, holding Lumi’s hand. "Being her father is the greatest privilege of my life."
Judge Thorne smiled warmly and turned to Lumi. "Lumi, do you understand what adoption means?"
"Yes, Ma'am," Lumi said proudly, standing up on her tiptoes to reach the microphone. "It means David is my real dad forever, and no one can ever take me away from him."
"That is exactly right," Judge Thorne said, bringing her gavel down with a soft, decisive click. "Adoption petition granted. Congratulations, David and Lumi."

The courtroom broke into applause. Lumi threw her arms around my neck, hugging me with all her strength. I lifted her up, holding my daughter tight as tears of pure relief and joy washed over my eyes.
We were officially a family. Bound not by blood or legal manipulation, but by love, trust, and absolute devotion.
