Chapter 10 - Sunshine After the Storm

Five years later.
I sat on the front porch of our cottage, holding a warm cup of coffee as the morning sun broke over the pine trees of Mt. Hood. The air was crisp, fresh, and filled with the scent of blooming lavender and pine needles.
Lumi, now twelve years old, came jogging up the gravel driveway wearing her middle school track uniform, her golden hair tied back in a ponytail. She was tall, healthy, confident, and full of vibrant life. Her laughter echoed through the quiet valley as our golden retriever pup, Daisy, chased playfully at her heels.
"Morning, Dad!" she called out, bounding up the porch steps and dropping her backpack beside my chair. "I crushed my 800-meter time today!"
"I never doubted it for a second, kiddo," I smiled, pulling her into a quick half-hug. "Breakfast is almost ready. Pancakes and fresh berries from the garden."
"Awesome! I'm starving!"
She headed inside, singing along to a song playing on her phone, completely unburdened by the past.
I looked out across the sunny yard, reflecting on the journey that had brought us here. Three weeks into a doomed marriage, I had found a terrified, silent little girl holding a hidden flash drive in a dark house full of lies. I had fought through a nightmare of deception, poison, and law to pull her out of the shadows.
Now, those dark days felt like a distant, bad dream.
Lumi had her childhood back. She had safety, joy, confidence, and a father who would protect her for the rest of his days. The secret she carried was no longer a burden of abuse, but a reminder that love, truth, and courage can overcome even the darkest evil.

I took a sip of my coffee, smiled into the morning light, and walked inside to join my daughter for breakfast.
Our story had begun in silence and tears, but it had ended in warmth, laughter, and light.
