Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Death

The blue glow of my laptop screen illuminated the dark room, casting sharp shadows against the walls as the video files loaded one by one. Sitting on the edge of the bed with Lumi asleep beside me—her small arm wrapped securely around her unzipped stuffed otter—I plugged in my headphones and clicked on the remaining folders.
What I found went far beyond child abuse and staged allegations.
Deep within a hidden subfolder labeled with a series of innocent-looking dates was a repository of scanned documents. I opened the first file: a life insurance policy underwritten by a major national carrier. My name was at the top, listed as the primary insured. The payout was three million dollars. Beneath my name was a forged signature—my handwriting mimicked with terrifying precision.
The policy contained an accidental death rider that doubled the payout in the event of home poisoning or traumatic injury.
I scrolled further. There were medical journals saved as PDFs detailing the toxicological effects of succinylcholine and insidiously slow-acting cardiac glycosides—compounds that mimic natural heart failure in trauma patients and are notoriously difficult to detect during standard post-mortem screens unless specifically requested. As a trauma nurse, I knew these drugs well; Maris knew I had access to them, making me the perfect target for a framed suicide or accidental overdose.
Then came the financial records. Maris had opened four offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under a shell company named Lumière Holdings. Her previous husband—Lumi’s biological father—had died four years earlier of what was officially ruled a sudden cardiac arrest while hiking alone in western Oregon. The policy payout from his death had funded the purchase of the beautiful, pristine Victorian house on Birch Street.
My stomach churned as the horrifying architecture of her plan became crystal clear. Maris wasn’t just an abusive mother or a manipulator. She was a calculated, serial predator. She targeted lonely, stable men—first a quiet software engineer, now a hardworking trauma nurse—built a picture-perfect domestic facade, abused her daughter into becoming a weapon of false testimony, and then executed her victims for massive financial gains.
If I tried to leave or expose her without flawless legal strategy, she would unleash the staged abuse videos and false allegations to destroy my reputation and put me behind bars before I could ever protect Lumi. Worse, if she realized I knew the truth, she would accelerate her timeline and attempt to end my life immediately.
I looked down at Lumi, her breathing light and steady. Her tiny fingers twitched in her sleep.

"I won't let her hurt you ever again," I whispered, closing the laptop and carefully tucking the flash drive into an encrypted external drive hidden inside my hospital locker bag. "I promise."
The battle had begun, but to win it, I had to play the part of the oblivious, devoted husband for a little longer.
