Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The execution of the plan was set for Thursday night.

Maris had cooked a heavy stew and placed two small white pills next to my water glass on the nightstand. "For your insomnia, darling," she had said with a sweet, reassuring smile. "You’ve been working so hard lately."

I nodded appreciatively, pretending to swallow the pills while actually palming them. An hour later, I began my act.

I stumbled out into the hallway, slurring my words, clutching my chest, and falling dramatically against the banister. "Maris... my heart... I can't..."

Maris rushed out of her bedroom. For a moment, she stood at the top of the stairs, watching me struggle with a cold, detached satisfaction that made her look like a stranger. She didn't reach for her phone to call 911. Instead, she stepped down slowly, pulling her phone out to begin recording a video—likely to document my "accidental overdose" and "confused state."

"David? Are you alright? Oh no, did you take too many of your medications?" she said in a raised, performative voice meant for the camera.

"You... what did you give me..." I gasped, collapsing onto the Persian rug in the hallway.

Lumi stepped out of her bedroom, her eyes wide with terror. "David!"

"Lumi, go back to your room!" Maris snapped, her gentle mother persona dropping instantly as she glared at the child. "Don't come out!"

Suddenly, the front door downstairs was shattered off its frame with a heavy battering ram.

"POLICE! SEARCH WARRANT! STAY WHERE YOU ARE!"

Bright flashlight beams swept up the grand staircase. Detective Cole led a tactical entry team, firearms raised, followed immediately by Child Protective Services officers and emergency medical technicians.

Maris froze, her phone dropping to the floor. The color drained completely from her face. "What... what is the meaning of this?! My husband is having a medical emergency!"

"Drop to your knees! Put your hands behind your head now!" Detective Cole barked, stepping over me and pointing his weapon straight at Maris.

"I am the victim here!" Maris screamed, her voice shrilling into panic as officers grabbed her wrists and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto her. "David is abusive! He’s been threatening me and my daughter! Lumi, tell them! Tell them what he did!"

Maris turned her frantic, terrifying gaze toward the seven-year-old girl standing by the doorway.

For the first time in her life, Lumi didn't cower. She didn't drop her gaze. She looked at her mother, then walked over and stood right beside me, taking my hand in her small, warm fingers.

"He didn't do anything wrong, Mommy," Lumi said, her voice clear and unbroken. "You did."
