Chapter 7 - The Dawn of Labor

Three days after the boardroom victory, the stress and excitement finally caught up with my body.
I was sitting in the conservatory of Julian’s estate, sketching designs for a historic library restoration I had recently been offered, when a sharp, intense cramp gripped my lower abdomen.
I gasped, dropping my charcoal pencil.
The pain washed over me in a sudden, powerful wave. I tried to stand, but a sudden gush of warm water broke against the stone floor.
"Julian!" I called out, my voice tight with sudden panic.
Within seconds, the heavy doors of the conservatory burst open. Julian rushed in, throwing his jacket aside as he saw me leaning heavily against the worktable.
"Cesily! What is it?"
"It's time," I gasped, clutching my belly as another contraction hit. "The baby... she's coming. It's two weeks early!"
Most men in that situation would panic. Grant certainly would have run around screaming or frozen entirely. But Julian became an anchor of pure, focused calm.
He scooped me up into his arms effortlessly, lifting me against his chest. "I’ve got you," he whispered close to my ear, his breath warm against my cheek. "You're safe. We’re going."
He carried me down to the car, where his private driver was already waiting with the doors open. Julian slid into the back seat with me, keeping me cradled in his lap, supporting my back through every surging contraction.
During the twenty-minute drive to the private hospital, I squeezed Julian’s hand so hard my knuckles turned white. He didn't flinch once. He brushed the damp hair away from my forehead, whispering words of encouragement, holding me steady against the storm of labor.
"You're doing so well, my love," he murmured gently, kissing my temple. "Just breathe with me."
My love. The word slipped out of him so naturally, so deeply felt, that even through the haze of pain, my heart skipped a beat.
When we arrived at the hospital, the medical team was already waiting. They wheeled me into the delivery room. As they prepared the room, the nurse looked at Julian, who was standing by my head, still holding my hand tightly.
"Are you the father?" the nurse asked, poised with a clipboard.
Julian hesitated for a split second, looking down at me with a mix of respect and quiet longing. "I am—"
"He's the man who is going to be here with me," I interrupted firmly, looking up at Julian with tears in my eyes. "He’s family."
Julian’s eyes softened, a profound look of emotion passing over his face. He squeezed my hand tighter. "I'm not leaving your side, Cesily. Not now. Not ever."
For the next four hours, Julian remained my rock. He held my leg, wiped my brow with cold towels, and whispered words of incredible strength into my ear. When the final push came, and the room was filled with the sudden, glorious sound of a baby's loud, angry cry, Julian let out a shaky, emotional breath.
"It's a girl," the doctor announced, beaming as she lifted the tiny, wriggling baby. "A healthy, beautiful baby girl."
They cleaned her up and placed her directly on my chest. She was tiny, with a tuft of dark hair and dark blue eyes that blinked up at me.
Julian leaned over us, looking at the tiny life resting on my chest. A single tear escaped his eye, tracing down his cheek.
"She’s perfect," Julian whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
May you like
"Her name is Clara," I said, my voice trembling with happiness as I looked at Julian. "Clara Hope."
Julian reached out with a long finger, and tiny Clara instantly wrapped her whole fist around his index finger. Julian looked up at me, his eyes filled with a love so pure, so fierce, that I knew in that moment my old life was truly gone, and a magnificent new one had begun.
