Chapter 4 - The Tides of Reckoning

Two weeks passed. In the sanctuary of Julian’s estate, my world transformed.

Julian didn't just provide a roof over my head; he provided an fortress. He hired the top family lawyer in the state, Eleanor Vance-Ross (no relation, but a woman with a ferocious reputation), along with a team of forensic accountants.

Every morning, Julian and I sat in his sunlit study overlooking the crashing waves. He was patient, walking me through corporate documents, bank statements, and real estate deeds. As it turned out, Grant’s "business expansion" was a sham. He had funneled $400,000 of my personal inheritance—money my late father had left me for my restoration business—into a shell company co-owned by Sloan’s father, a disgraced real estate mogul trying to buy his way back into society.

"They didn't just want you out of the picture, Cesily," Julian explained one morning, sliding a stack of bank transfers toward me. "Dorothia and Sloan's father arranged this match months ago. Sloan’s family gets the Vance name to clean up their reputation, and Dorothia gets access to Sloan’s offshore trust fund. You were an obstacle. They tried to break your spirit so you would sign a quiet pre-nuptial departure without looking at the books."

"They thought I was weak," I said, feeling a cold fire ignite in my chest. "They thought because I didn't scream back at Dorothia, I was easy to crush."

"They confused your grace with weakness," Julian said softly. He reached across the desk and gently laid his hand over mine. His touch was warm, steady, and sent a subtle shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with revenge. "It is the single biggest mistake they will ever make."

Meanwhile, Grant was unravelling.

He had tried calling me dozens of times during the first week, leaving frantic voicemails that shifted rapidly from condescending ("Cesily, stop being dramatic, come home so we can talk") to desperate ("Cesily, where are you? Uncle Julian won't return my calls, and the board is asking questions!").

Then came the afternoon of week three.

I was walking through the manicured gardens near the gate of Julian’s estate when a black SUV screeched to a halt outside the iron bars. Grant stumbled out, looking disheveled, his tie loose, his eyes bloodshot.

"Cesily!" he yelled through the gates. "Cesily, let me in! What the hell are you doing with my uncle?!"

I stopped twenty feet away, wearing a cozy cashmere sweater Julian had bought me, my pregnancy now unmistakably pronounced. I looked at Grant, and for the first time, I felt no anger. Only pity.

"You shouldn't be here, Grant," I said calmly.

"You're making a fool out of me!" Grant slammed his hands against the iron bars. "My mother is furious! Sloan is threatening to break off the agreement because Julian froze our joint accounts! Do you have any idea what you're doing to my career?"

"Your career?" I let out a soft, dry laugh. "You stole my father's legacy to fund your mistress's lifestyle, Grant. You let your mother pour ice water on your child. You don't have a career anymore. You have a court date."

"He’s using you!" Grant screamed, his face contorting in rage. "Julian doesn't care about you! He’s using you to take over Vance Global! He’s always hated my mother, and you’re just his pawn!"

"He treats me like a human being," I replied, turning my back on him. "Something you forgot how to do the moment you took me for granted."

As I walked back toward the house, I heard Julian’s security team pulling up to escort Grant off the property. I didn't look back once.
