Chapter 9 - Finding Peace

Two years passed like a breath of fresh air.
My foundation had successfully helped thousands of individuals rebuild their lives after escaping abusive environments. My professional life was thriving, and my personal life was filled with genuine friendships, family warmth, and absolute tranquility.
One quiet Sunday afternoon, I sat in the glass-enclosed garden of our family estate, reading a book on modern economics while sipping iced herbal tea.
Elena approached quietly, holding a small envelope.
"Madam, a piece of mail arrived through the prison correspondence program. It's addressed to you."
I looked down at the envelope. The handwriting was neat, albeit slightly shaky—a handwriting I recognized instantly, even after all this time. It was from Kyle.
"Do you want me to dispose of it?" Elena asked gently.
"No," I replied, setting my book aside. "Let's see what he has to say."
I opened the envelope and unfolded the single sheet of prison-issued paper.
Clara, Or Victoria—I realize now I never even knew your real name. I am writing this not to ask for forgiveness, because I know I deserve none. Every day in this cell, I replay that night—the arrogance, the cruelty, the blind stupidity of throwing away the only real love and protection I ever had. You gave me everything, and I repaid you with betrayal. I have lost everything, exactly as you promised. But in this darkness, I have finally learned what humility means. I don't expect an answer, and I certainly don't expect mercy. I just wanted to say I am deeply, truly sorry for the monster I was. Kyle.
I folded the letter neatly and placed it back into the envelope. There was no anger left in my heart—only a quiet closure. He had paid his debt to society, and I had long since moved on to build a magnificent life of my own.

"Is there a response, Madam?" Elena asked.
I shook my head with a gentle smile. "No response needed, Elena. Some stories don't need a sequel."
