Chapter 1 - The First Crack

They laughed while my husband whipped me twenty times to impress the woman he'd been secretly building a future with. He thought I was a nobody who would beg for mercy—but one phone call to my billionaire father turned his victory into the first minute of his complete destruction.

The first crack of the leather stole the air from my lungs.

For a heartbeat, I stood frozen, convinced Kyle would stop. Surely this had to be some sick attempt to scare me. But the second strike landed even harder, and by the time the twentieth tore across my back, warm blood dripped onto the polished marble beneath my knees.

Standing beside him, Thalia smiled with the satisfaction of someone who had just won the grand prize.

She adjusted the diamond bracelet on her wrist—a bracelet I had unknowingly paid for—and looked down at me with open contempt.

"She's still pretending she's innocent," she said sweetly. "It's almost adorable."

Kyle spun the riding crop in his hand before resting it against his shoulder.

"You embarrassed Thalia tonight."

I struggled to breathe through the pain.

"She told your board that I couldn't have children."

Thalia shrugged without a trace of guilt.

"I only repeated what everyone was already whispering."

"And she told them I married you for your money."

Kyle smirked.

"Didn't you?"

That sentence hurt more than every lash combined.

For three years, I had played the perfect wife. I smiled for cameras, hosted charity galas, avoided interviews, and let the world believe Kyle had rescued an ordinary woman with no family, no influence, and nowhere else to go.

His favorite story was that he had built everything himself.

He never questioned why government officials suddenly welcomed him after our wedding.

He never wondered why impossible business deals somehow landed in his lap.

And he certainly never asked why people with real power always treated me with quiet respect.

Thalia crouched in front of me, her expensive perfume filling the air.

"You should apologize," she whispered. "If you're polite, maybe I'll let you stay in one of the guest houses after the divorce."

I slowly lifted my head.

"Divorce?"

Kyle tossed a folder onto the floor.

The divorce papers slid across the marble until they stopped beside my shaking hand.

"I'm done carrying you," he said coldly. "Thalia's pregnant. I'm starting over."

She rested both hands on her stomach and smiled proudly.

Oddly enough, the pain in my back disappeared.

Not because I had healed.

Because every illusion I had been protecting shattered in an instant.

There was nothing left to save.

With trembling fingers, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

Kyle laughed.

"What now? Calling the police? Go ahead. Tell them your successful husband punished his unstable wife."

I looked him straight in the eyes despite the blood running down my face.

"No."

I unlocked the screen and pressed one familiar number.

My father answered on the first ring.

"Dad," I said calmly, "it's time. Do exactly what you warned me you would if he ever crossed the line. Destroy his life."

Silence filled the room.

Kyle's confidence vanished.

For the first time since I had met him, the color drained from his face as he realized he had never truly known the woman he had just betrayed.
