Chapter 5 - The Web Tightens

The legal storm that hit Kyle Vance was historic. Within forty-eight hours, federal investigators moved in, seizing all remaining assets, corporate holdings, and personal properties. Every luxury car, every offshore account, and every piece of art he had collected was cataloged and repossessed.

I spent the following week at my family's private estate overlooking the coastline, surrounded by the quiet comfort of people who truly loved me. My father, Marcus Vance, sat with me on the veranda, pouring tea into fine porcelain cups.

"You handled that with immense restraint, Victoria," my father said, using my true given name—a name Kyle had never known. "I told you years ago that man was unworthy of you. His ambition was hollow, built on quicksand."

"I wanted to believe people could be genuine, Dad," I murmured, watching the waves crash against the rocks below. "I wanted to prove that I didn't need our name to find happiness."

"And you learned your lesson," my father replied gently, placing a warm hand over mine. "Sometimes, the fire has to burn completely down to the foundation before you can build something truly enduring. What are your plans for his final sentencing hearing tomorrow?"

"I'm going," I said firmly. "Not out of vengeance. But to close the chapter."

Meanwhile, outside our estate's high security gates, the media circus was in full swing. Reporters swarmed every corner, trying to uncover the identity of the mysterious billionaire heiress who had dismantled Vance Global in less than a day. Thalia had tried to sell her story to the tabloids, only to find herself slapped with multiple lawsuits for defamation, extortion, and fraud by my father's legal team, effectively silencing her.

Kyle, abandoned by everyone—his friends, his business associates, and his mistress—sat in a cold holding cell, awaiting a trial where he faced up to fifteen years in federal prison for corporate fraud and aggravated assault.

The arrogance that had defined his life was completely replaced by a crushing, inescapable reality. He had aimed too high, stepped on the wrong person, and learned the hardest lesson the world could teach: never underestimate the quiet partner in the shadows.
