Chapter 7 - Storming the Bastille

The tarmac of Fulton County Airfield erupted into chaotic light and sound.

Dozens of armed state troopers spilled out from behind their cruisers, rifles raised, spotlight beams blinding the tarmac. The two private security guards immediately dropped their weapons and raised their hands in the air, surrendering beside the SUV where Daniel lay bruised and breathless on the wet asphalt.

"PUT YOUR HANDS UP! STEP AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT!" the tactical commander shouted over a loudspeaker.

On the upper platform of the jet airstairs, Arthur Vane stood frozen, his aristocratic composure shattering instantly as the glaring police spotlights illuminated his face.

"This is a private aircraft!" Vane screamed back, his voice crackling with desperate fury. "I am Arthur Vane! Call the Governor! Call my legal team!"

"Shut up, Arthur!" Eleanor sobbed, cowering near the jet door as state troopers bounded up the stairs with tactical shields, roughly grabbing Vane and slamming him against the side of the fuselage, snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

Sarah didn't look at them. She sank onto her knees right there on the wet platform of the airstairs, clutching the tiny, warm bundle tightly against her chest.

She pulled back the fleece blanket.

A tiny, perfectly formed face looked up at her through the drizzle. Dark blue eyes, a button nose, and a soft tuft of dark brown hair. The baby had stopped crying, her small, weightless hand reaching out to brush against Sarah’s collarbone.

Around her wrist was the pink plastic hospital bracelet:

BABY GIRL SARAH MILLER

DELIVERED: 11:42 P.M.

"Emma..." Sarah sobbed, pressing her forehead against her daughter’s soft cheek. Tears rolled down her face, mixing with the falling rain. "I've got you. I've got you, baby. Nobody is ever taking you again."

A tactical paramedic rushed up the stairs, throwing a heavy wool emergency blanket over Sarah and the baby.

"Ma'am! Ma'am, sit still!" the paramedic urged, checking Sarah’s vitals. "You're bleeding through your surgical dressing! We need to get you to an emergency transport right now!"

"Is she okay?" Sarah gasped, her voice trembling as she refused to let go of the infant. "Check her... please, check my daughter..."

The paramedic gently examined the infant wrapped in Sarah’s arms. "She's healthy, ma'am. Oxygen levels are great, pink skin, strong pulse. She’s fine. But you are in hypovolemic shock. We need an ambulance!"

Down at the foot of the stairs, Daniel was being handcuffed by a state trooper. He looked up through the torrential rain, his eyes meeting Sarah’s.

There was no anger left in Sarah’s heart for him—only a cold, hollow pity. Daniel had traded his soul for a short-term escape from his own weakness, and now he would spend years paying for it behind bars. He gave her a weak, sorrowful nod, accepting his fate, before he was guided into the back of a police cruiser.

Maya ran across the tarmac, dodging police tape, her face wet with rain and tears.

"Sarah!" Maya cried out, climbing the stairs and kneeling beside her. "You did it! God, Sarah, you did it!"

"We did it," Sarah whispered, clutching Emma closer as the paramedics carefully lifted her onto a stretcher, keeping her daughter secured tightly against her chest.

"The State Police elite task force is already executing a raid on Saint Jude’s Memorial," Maya whispered urgently, holding Sarah’s hand as they rolled the stretcher toward an incoming emergency ambulance. "They've secured the server rooms, and Dr. Reed was arrested in his office trying to shred physical intake logs."

As they loaded Sarah and Emma into the back of the warm, dry ambulance, Sarah looked out at the flashing red lights reflecting across the dark tarmac. The nightmare was ending. The conspiracy that had sought to erase her motherhood had collapsed under the weight of its own greed.
