Chapter 6 - Point of No Return

The jet engine roared, a deafening blast of hot air and jet-fuel fumes sweeping across the tarmac as Sarah parked the SUV fifty feet from the boarding stairs of the Gulfstream.

Two men stepped out from the shadow of the hangar.

One was tall, thin, and impeccably dressed in a tailored navy-blue wool overcoat, holding a silver-handled walking stick despite showing no limp. Arthur Vane. Beside him stood a sleek, sharp-featured woman in a camel-hair coat—his wife, Eleanor Vane.

In Eleanor’s arms was a soft, pink bundle, wrapped tightly against the cold wind and rain.

Emma.

Sarah’s heart slammed against her ribs like a sledgehammer. Every instinct screamed at her to throw open the car door and charge across the wet asphalt, but she forced her hands to remain firmly planted on the steering wheel.

"Remember your lines," Sarah hissed to Daniel, keeping her voice low. "Get them away from the jet stairs."

Daniel stepped out of the SUV, his legs trembling as he walked into the blinding floodlights of the tarmac. The freezing rain soaked his shirt within seconds.

"Mr. Vane!" Daniel shouted over the roar of the engines, holding up the folder. "I have the remaining release forms!"

Arthur Vane stopped at the foot of the airstairs, turning slowly. His expression was cold, filled with absolute disdain.

"You were paid handsomely to vanish, Mr. Miller," Vane said, his voice carrying clearly over the turbine whine. "Why are you here?"

"Dr. Reed realized the maternal blood work and custody clearance form lacked an official state stamp," Daniel lied, stepping closer. "If you land in Switzerland without it, international child protection services will flag the tail number. I just need you to sign the receipt acknowledgment."

Vane frowned, looking back toward the dark cabin of the jet. "Hand it to my security chief."

One of the armed guards stepped forward, reaching out for the folder.

At that moment, a sudden gust of wind caught the pink blanket in Eleanor Vane’s arms, pulling back the heavy fleece hood.

A sharp, clear baby cry echoed across the rain-swept tarmac.

It was a high-pitched, delicate sound—the sound of a newborn girl calling out in the cold air.

The sound struck Sarah like a physical blow. The haze of pain, drugs, and fatigue evaporated instantly, replaced by a surge of pure, unadulterated motherly adrenaline.

She didn't wait for Daniel. She didn't wait for the police.

Sarah threw the car door open and stepped out onto the tarmac.

"EMMA!" Sarah screamed at the top of her lungs.

Arthur Vane snapped his head toward the car. Eleanor gasped, instinctively pulling the baby closer to her chest and taking a step up the airstairs.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Vane barked, glaring at Daniel. "You brought her here?!"

"Sarah, no!" Daniel yelled, turning around.

The two security guards drew their sidearms, pointing them straight at Sarah as she marched past the hood of the SUV. Her hospital scrubs were wet with rain, stained with blood at her waist, but her eyes were fixed solely on the pink bundle in Eleanor Vane’s arms.

"Stop right there, lady!" the lead guard shouted, stepping into her path. "Get on the ground!"

"That is my daughter," Sarah said, her voice piercing through the storm. She didn't slow down. She walked straight toward the drawn gun. "You took her out of my body while I was drugged. You sold her like cargo."

"She’s delusional!" Eleanor Vane shouted from the stairs, her voice laced with panic. "Arthur, get us on the plane! Now!"

"Shoot her if she takes another step," Arthur Vane commanded coldly, turning to follow his wife up the stairs.

The lead guard leveled his pistol straight at Sarah’s chest, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Don't do it!" Daniel suddenly screamed.

In a shocking burst of desperate courage, Daniel threw himself forward, tackling the armed guard around the waist. Both men crashed onto the slick wet asphalt. The gun discharged with a deafening bang, the bullet ricocheting off the landing gear of the jet with a metallic strike.

"GO, SARAH! RUN!" Daniel roared, wrestling the guard for the weapon.

Sarah didn't hesitate. She surged forward, sprinting past the second guard, who was distracted by the struggle on the ground.

She bounded up the metallic airstairs three steps at a time, her lower abdomen burning as if caught in a furnace, but she felt no weakness. She caught up to Eleanor Vane just as the woman reached the upper doorway of the aircraft.

"Give me my baby!" Sarah roared.

She grabbed Eleanor’s coat collar, pulling the woman back out onto the platform of the stairs. Eleanor shrieked, striking at Sarah with her free hand, but Sarah blocked the blow, her fingers wrapping firmly around the edges of the pink fleece blanket.

"Let go of her! She's ours!" Eleanor screamed hysterically. "We paid for her! She's our daughter!"

"She's MY blood!" Sarah snarled.

With a powerful wrench, Sarah pulled the baby away from Eleanor’s grip, tucking the infant safely into her chest, shielding the child with her own body as she spun away from the door.

Down below, siren lights suddenly burst through the rain at the outer airfield perimeter.

Dozens of red and blue emergency lights flashed through the heavy downpour as a fleet of State Police cruisers crashed through the chain-link gates of Hangar 4, tires screeching across the wet tarmac, surrounding the Gulfstream aircraft.

"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS NOW!" megaphones boomed through the night air.
