Chapter 6 - The Aftermath of Truth

Within forty-eight hours, the scandal broke across global financial markets.
Headlines screamed across every major news network: TECH BILLIONAIRE GRANT STERLING UNCOVERS MASSIVE CORPORATE ESPIONAGE RING; FIANCEE ARRESTED. Financial analysts dissected the downfall of Vanguard Global Investments as federal raids seized their offices, freezing Julian Vance’s assets and dismantling his illegal empire piece by piece.
Inside the Sterling estate, the heavy, oppressive gloom that had hung over the halls for two years seemed to lift overnight.
The storm-dark painting with the hidden camera was taken down from the wall and carted away by federal agents as evidence. In its place, Grant commissioned a magnificent, sunlit landscape depicting a peaceful meadow beneath a clear blue sky—a symbol of new beginnings, clarity, and truth.
Helen was sitting at the kitchen table in the garage apartment, nervously twisting a dish towel in her hands, when a knock sounded at the door.
She opened it to find Grant Sterling standing on the threshold. He wasn't wearing his usual formal suit; he wore a simple charcoal sweater, and his face looked lighter, free of the perpetual exhaustion that had defined him for years.
"Grant," Helen said quickly, her voice tinged with lingering anxiety. "Is everything... is everything alright? Do you need us to pack?"
Grant smiled gently, stepping inside the modest, warm apartment. "Helen, please sit down."
Helen and Maya sat side by side on the worn plaid sofa. Grant remained standing, looking down at them with a profound expression of humility and gratitude.
"For two years, you both worked tirelessly in this house," Grant began, his voice warm and steady. "You kept your heads down, you respected the rules, and you kept this place running. But more than that... your daughter saved everything I built. She saved my company, my reputation, and quite frankly, my sanity."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound document, placing it gently on the coffee table.
"What is this?" Helen asked, glancing down at the papers.
"It's a deed," Grant said simply. "And a scholarship trust. Effective immediately, the mortgage on your family home back in the city is fully paid off. Furthermore, this trust will cover every cent of Maya's education all the way through her master's degree, at any university in the world she chooses."
Helen’s hand flew to her mouth, tears instantly welling up in her eyes. "Grant... we can't accept this. It's... it's too much."
May you like
"It's not enough," Grant corrected firmly, looking directly at Maya. "Not for what she did. You showed courage that grown men twice your age couldn't muster, Maya. You saved my life. I want to make sure yours is secured."
Maya looked up at him, a small, proud smile touching the corners of her mouth. She knew her grandfather would have been proud of her, too.
