Chapter 4 - The Spider and the Fly

Two days later, the atmosphere inside the Sterling estate felt normal on the surface, but underneath, it was charged like a thunderstorm waiting to break.

Vanessa Croft returned from a high-end salon appointment, her honey-dark hair falling in immaculate waves around her shoulders. She smelled of expensive perfume and faint rain. She walked through the grand foyer, humming softly to herself, and headed straight for Grant’s study.

Inside the study, Grant sat at his desk. The hidden camera had been carefully reinserted into the frame exactly as it was found, but Grant had rerouted its transmitter through a secure sandbox server controlled by his head of cybersecurity, Arthur. Now, every feed Vanessa received wasn't a live look at reality—it was a carefully looped, synthesized playback of old footage, mixed with fabricated documents designed to look like confidential research.

The door swung open, and Vanessa glided inside, wearing a radiant smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

"Grant, darling," she sang out, walking over to massage his shoulders with practiced, tender strokes. "You've been working so late again. You're going to give yourself a heart attack."

Grant leaned into her touch, forcing a tired, grateful smile that completely masked the boiling rage inside him. "I have to, Vanessa. The board meeting tomorrow is critical. We're finalizing the acquisition deal for the new lithium mines in South America."

Vanessa’s fingers paused on his shoulders for just a fraction of a second—a micro-hesitation that only someone watching her closely would catch.

"Oh?" she asked, her voice dripping with casual curiosity. "I thought the board was leaning toward the Australian deposits? Weren't those cheaper?"

"They were," Grant murmured, playing his part to absolute perfection. "But the South American site has an exclusive patent on direct-extraction technology. If we secure those rights tomorrow, our competitors won't be able to touch us for a decade. The final contract documents are right here in my encrypted thumb drive."

He tapped the side of his desk, where a sleek, metallic USB drive sat glowing with a steady blue LED.

"It's all there," Grant continued, closing his laptop. "Financial projections, security codes for the vault, and the personal signatures of the board members. Once I upload this to the central mainframe tomorrow morning at nine, the deal is legally binding."

Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward the metallic thumb drive. A flash of predatory triumph crossed her face, gone as quickly as a lightning strike.

"You're a genius, Grant," she whispered, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "You always think of everything."

"I try," Grant replied quietly. "I try."

Later that evening, while Helen and Maya were cleaning the main dining room, Maya happened to look out the tall French doors toward the gravel driveway. She saw Vanessa standing near the edge of the terrace, talking on her phone in hushed, urgent tones, her hand shielding her mouth as she whispered rapidly into the receiver.

The trap was baited. The fly was buzzing around the web. Now, all they had to do was wait for the morning.
